Cadet 1947 (Kadet 1947) is a 2021 Indonesian historical drama movie about a group of Indonesian Air Force cadets during the Indonesian War of Independence from Dutch colonial rule in the late 1940s. The film were directed by Rahabi Mandra and Aldo Swastia.
Set in July 1947, amidst the Dutch offensive “Operation Product”, the story follows a group of young cadets of the Indonesian Air Force Pilot School at Maguwo airfield, which were keen to fly into combat against the enemy, but were only given menial task due to their status as cadets.
The film was loosely based on an Indonesian air raid on Dutch military bases on 29 July 1947, which was the first combat mission of the Indonesian Air Force.
The following weapons were used in the film Cadet 1947:
Pistols
M1911A1
An unnamed Dutch captain (Eric Van Loon) is seen pulling an M1911A1 to threaten Adji (Martino Lio).
Submachine Guns
M3 Grease Gun
M3 Grease Guns can be seen carried by Dutch soldiers. It can be distinguished by its distinctive external cocking crank lever.
Sten Mk II
At least two Dutch soldiers and an Indonesian soldier is seen carrying Canadian model Sten Mk II. It is identifiable by its ‘skeleton’ type stock.
Rifles
Lee-Enfield No. 1 Mk III*
Adji (Martino Lio), Tardjo (Wafda Saifan), Sigit (Bisma Karisma) and other Indonesian soldiers can be seen carrying the Lee-Enfield No. 1 Mk III*.
Mauser Carbine
The unnamed armory guard (Agus Usholi) and other Indonesian soldiers carries what appears to be a Mauser carbine. It is very likely the Dutch colonial and/or Indonesian contract FN Mauser Mle 1930 Carbine. The colonial contract carbines were supplied to IOB ("East Indies Entrepreneur") guards and the colonial police. Aside from different markings, the police variant also had side mounted sling swivel, while the IOB variant has none. The later Indonesian contract is similar to IOB carbines, albeit chambered in 7.62mm NATO instead. Some of the colonial contract would also rechambered to 7.62mm NATO.
The appearance of this carbine is anachronistic, as in reality the Dutch would only order the carbines starting in 1948, a year after the film supposed to take place.
M1 Garand
M1 Garand is the main rifle used by Dutch soldiers throughout the movie. Some Indonesian soldiers are also seen carrying the rifle.
Machine Guns
.30 AN/M2
Two pairs of fixed mount .30 AN/M2, aircraft variant of the Browning M1919A4, is seen mounted in the wings of Dutch Curtiss P-40 aircraft.
The P-40 variant depicted in the movie is of the earlier variant and is seen with markings of the 1st American Volunteer Group (of Flying Tigers fame) serving with the Chinese Air Force in World War 2, thus its appearance is anachronistic. The correct variant used by the Dutch East Indies Air Force were the P-40E or N variants, which were armed with .50 AN/M2, variant of the Browning M2.
.50 AN/M2
A .50 AN/M2, aircraft variant of the Browning M2, is seen on tripod mount and used as anti-aircraft gun at a Dutch military base during the night air raid.
Japanese aircraft machine guns
Prop machine guns of unspecified type are mounted on the Indonesian Kawasaki Ki-48 and Nakajima Ki-49 bombers.
Unidentified light machine gun
An unidentified light machine gun can be seen inside the armory.
Grenades
Type 97 hand grenade
A Japanese Type 97 hand grenade is seen carried by Dul (Chicco Kurniawan). Later he tries to throw it at a group of Dutch soldiers.
