Birdshot is a 2016 coming of age drama-thriller film starring Mary Joy Apostol as Maya, a hunter in the Philippine countryside who unwittingly and illegally kills an endangered Philippine eagle. As two policemen begin to investigate the eagle's death in the area near her home, Maya must hide her direct involvement. The film garnered an extremely positive response from both critics and audiences, with praise going to the film's cinematography and direction by Mikhail Red. Birdshot was the first Filipino film released worldwide by Netflix, and was also submitted as the Philippines' entry into the Best Foreign Language Film at the 90th Academy Awards, though it was not nominated.
