Around the World in 80 Days (1989)
|
Around the World in 80 Days is a 1989 American-German-Italian-Yugoslavian three-part miniseries based on the novel by Jules Vern. The reclusive and eccentric Phileas Fogg from London bets with gentlemen from the Reform Club that he can circumnavigate the world in 80 days. Together with his servant Passepartout, who is only hired on the same day and is French, he embarks on the dangerous and almost impossible journey. However, the agent Wilbur Fix, who believes that Fogg is involved in a robbery at the National Bank, tries everything he can to prevent Fogg from continuing his journey.
The following weapons were used in the miniseries Around the World in 80 Days:
Handguns
MAS Mle. 1892
The first country in "Part 1" Phileas Fogg (Pierce Brosnan) and his servant Jean Passepartout (Eric Idle) travel through is France during the turmoil of the aftermath of the Franco-Prussian War and the Commune de Paris revolutionary government. Members of this Commune are seen with anachronistic Mle 1892 Revolvers, as the start of Fogg's journey is in 1872, the appearance of this revolver is twenty years ahead. A more historically accurate choice would be a Lefaucheux Model 1858.
It is also worth mentioning that this spontaneously formed revolutionary Paris City Council was crushed by the French Army at the end of May 1871. The street fighting scenes shown in Paris are historically incorrect for the year in which the novel is set.
Flintlock Pistol
During a boat trip through eastern British India, a Burmese bandit is seen with a Flintlock Pistol in "Part 2".
Smith & Wesson Victory Model
What appears to be an anachronistic Smith & Wesson Victory Model is carried by a British Army officer in the second episode.
Webley Mk. VI
An anachronistic Webley .455 Mk VI is wielded by another British Army officer in the same episode as a substitute Adams Revolver.
Derringer
Jesse James (Stephen Nichols) hides a Derringer inside his left boot.
Single Action Army
In "Part 3" Single Action Armys are wielded by Frank James (Michael Gable), Jesse James (Stephen Nichols), Captain Lacey (Bruce Troy Davis), and many other cowboys. Jean Passepartout (Eric Idle) purchased five SAAs before going on the train.
The Single Action Army was designed in 1872, but the production began one year later. So it stands in for other Colt revolvers like the 1851 Navy and 1860 Army.
Colt Lightning
Among the purchased revolvers by Jean Passepartout is a Colt Lightning which he hands over to Phileas Fogg (Pierce Brosnan) before a duel with Jesse James (Stephen Nichols). The use of the Colt Lightning is anachronistic for five years.

Rifles
Springfield Model 1873
Rifles that appear to be Trapdoor Springfield Rifles are seen carried by Burmese bandits and French Commune members. The Trapdoor Springfield predates the novel by a year and could be compared to the French Tabatière Rifle conversion used during the Franco-Prussian War and the Commune uprising. However, this is not entirely incorrect, as France had purchased a large number of Springfield Allin Model 1866 Trapdoor Conversions from the United States by 1870.
Enfield Pattern 1853
An Enfield Pattern 1853 is held by a French Commune member and is the only identified rifle that fits the time period. Despite this fact, this English rifled musket could represent French Minié Pattern rifles (Mle. 1851 and 1859, for example).
Martini-Henry Mk. II
Another rifle used by the Parisian Commune is the Martini-Henry Rifle which is also seen in the hands of British soldiers and Italian policemen. It appears to be the Mark II variant without a sling swivel on the buttstock. This variant was not introduced until five years later.
Winchester Model 1892
Cowboys and some American Indians in "Part 3" have Winchester Model 1892 rifles which are also anachronistic. This Winchester may stand in for the Model 1866 "Yellow Boy" rifle.
Unknown Rifles
Various unknown rifles are seen throughout the series. Some of them appear to be flintlock muskets.
Other
12 Gauge Double Barreled Shotgun
In "Part 2", Lenoir (Jean-Pierre Castaldi) owns a Double Barreled Shotgun.
Cannon
A cannon is seen when the trio rests in the US Army Fort Kearney.
