Anna and the King is a 1999 American romantic period drama film, loosely based on the memoirs of English governess Anna Leonowens. It is an adaptation of the semi-fictional 1944 novel Anna and the King of Siam. Set in the 1860s, the film stars Jodie Foster as Anna, a tutor to the many children of King Mongkut of Siam (Chow Yun-Fat). The film was notably banned in Thailand due to being deemed historically inaccurate and insulting to the real King Mongkut.
