That would be more correct, however I do feel like there needs to be a category that both muzzle loading rifles and muskets are in. If you are trying to ID one of these weapons you will generally not know if it is rifles or not, particularly if you are not very familiar with weapons of this era. Maybe something like a "Muzzleloader" category as well? Would be nice to have somewhere to put a gallery of the various muzzle loaders to help novices ID them. Just to add, I think this page can be safely deleted, as on looking on the page for the only listed appearance none of the muskets have a doglock (based on the hammer I think some of them are Charlevilles but not all). --commando552 (talk) 17:52, 11 February 2013 (EST)

Ah, here's a problem with a "musket" category: Tanegashima. It's not a musket, it's an arquebus. I stuck that in Category:Smoothbore for now, but that's not ideal either since it should technically include most shotguns. Thoughts? Evil Tim (talk) 05:51, 25 February 2013 (EST)

I don't really think we need a "Smoothbore" category. As you say it would include most shoguns along with a lot of "bazooka" type weapons and some grenade launchers. Also, the main purpose of the categories is to help people identify guns, and whether or not something is rifled is generally not apparent in a film. I think just having a "Muzzleloader" category is good enough. If we wanted to be technically correct, we could have "Long Gun" and "Handgun" categories, as these would be pretty much all encompassing. For example the Tanegashima would go in the "Handgun" category as it has no shoulder stock. As Funkychinaman said a "Handgun" category would contain pistols and revolvers (although countries other than America do not really distinguish the term pistol from handgun, it is useful to use the American definition for categorisation). --commando552 (talk) 13:18, 25 February 2013 (EST)

The Doglock musket, (named after the dog catch safety behind the cock), replaced the Jacobean/English lock of the early 1600's. The Doglock came into being around the 1640's and were popular in the British armed forces until about 1715. They remained in use as a regular issued weapon in the British navy for many years after this and eventually evolved into the Sea Service musket of the 1730's. These muskets were very popular in the colonies from the Caribbean to Canada.
