Sword Art Online II (July 5, 2014 - December 20, 2014)

In December 2025, months after the end of the events of Sword Art Online (Season 1), and Kazuto Kirigaya (Username: Kirito) is living peacefully back in the real world. However, he is recruited by Seijirou Kikuoka of the Ministry of Internal Affairs' Virtual Division to investigate in a series of killings in the Virtual Reality MMORPG game Gun Gale Online. A player calling himself "Death Gun" is suspected of causing the deaths of two GGO players via shooting their avatars in the game, somehow coincidentally causing their real bodies to suffer an acute heart attack.

Gun Gale Online is a sci-fi, gun-based VRMMORPG set on a post-apocalyptic Earth, featuring both real firearms as well as sci-fi blaster-style weapons called optical guns which fire light-based ammo; the former are intended for Player vs. Player combat, while the latter are generally for hunting NPC monsters. The main event in the story is a PvP battle royale style tournament called the Bullet of Bullets. As the story is set in a video game, all of the guns in the show appear in that context, with the exception two; one of those two is an airsoft replica.

Sword Art Online as a series has multiple story arcs and settings within the first two seasons. Sword Art Online features the Aincrad and Fairy Dance story arcs, and Extra Edition bonus episode, while Sword Art Online II features the Phantom Bullet, Calibur, and Mother's Rosario story arcs. As Phantom Bullet is the only of these story arcs to feature firearms, it's the only part of the first two seasons covered on this site. The second season is followed by a movie, Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale.

Warning: Some descriptions and images are potential spoilers for the series, read at your own risk.

The following weapons were used in the anime series Sword Art Online II:

Pistols

Norinco Type 54

The player calling himself "Death Gun" uses a Norinco Type 54 "Black Star" to supposedly murder players in Gun Gale Online. In the real world, a Type 54 was also used by a bank robber who was disarmed and killed with his own gun by Shino Asada (Username: Sinon) five years before the main story.

"Death Gun" draws and chambers his Black Star in a bar. Note the excellent trigger disciple, which is standard practice in anime. (Ep.1)
"Death Gun" fires his Type 54 at a monitor showing high-level player XeXeeD giving an interview. (Ep.1)
In the real world, a crazed bank/post office robber draws his Type 54. Note the awful trigger disciple, fitting the character. (Ep.3)
The robber threatens the manager with the Type 54, before shooting him and turning the gun on another employee. (Ep.3)
After the gun gets turned on her mother, the eleven-year-old Shino Asada attempts to disarm the robber. (Ep.3)
The robber slams Shino against the wall to get her off, but fumbles and drops his Black Star in the process. (Ep.3)
Shino grabs the pistol before he can... (Ep.3)
...and fires it when he keeps trying to get it back. (Ep.3)
Shino fires her third and final shot. (Ep.3)
Shino looks down at her legs and the Type 54, which has suffered a stovepipe jam. (Ep.3)
Shino doing research on the Type 54 a few years later. Note the mention of the Type 54 SMG (a PPS-43 copy) under the title, and a reference to the QSZ-92 on the right page. (Ep.3)
"Death Gun" prepares to execute another target with his Type 54, during the Bullet of Bullets tournament. (Ep.8)
"Death Gun" then aims his pistol at a holographic camera the audience uses to watch, and again declares his name and supposed ability, finishing with "It's showtime" in English. (Ep.9)
"Death Gun" once again draws his Black Star on a new victim. Note the hammer is down despite being used earlier. Rather than an error, considering "Death Gun"'s love of theatrics it seems he's going out of his way to remove the round from the chamber after each execution, just so he can dramatically chamber it again each time. (Ep. 9)
After another player unexpectedly appears, "Death Gun" swaps his Type 54 for his L115A3. (Ep.10)
"Death Gun" aims his Type 54 atop his pale horse, showing off the gun's rifling. (Ep.10)
A stitched sequence of the Type 54 firing two separate shots, showing the attention to detail with the trigger, hammer, and slide animations. (Ep.10)

FN Five-seveN

After purchasing his Kagemitsu G4 photon sword, Kirito acquires an FN Five-seveN as his sidearm, per Sinon's recommendation. Sinon's HUD symbol for her sidearm, which is a Glock 18C, is occasionally misrepresented as a Five-seveN.

Kirito aims his Five-seveN at the gun shop's firing range. He uses it left handed due to his photon sword being his primary weapon. (Ep.4)
A FPS-view of the FN Five-seveN. The Bullet Circle (green circle) is essentially the HUD's crosshair function, showing the area in which the bullet could land at that moment. Things like heart-rate, breathing, and similar affect accuracy significantly, and thus the size of the Bullet Circle. (Ep.4)
Kirito's fires his Five-seveN for the first time... (Ep.4)
...and is rather impressed. (Ep.4)
During the qualifying matches, Kirito aims his Five-seveN at Uemaru. (Ep.5)

...and returns it to his holster, where it stays for a considerable amount of time. (Ep.6)
After being reminded he had it by a familiar sensation, Kirito reaches for his trusty Five-seveN. (Ep.13)

Glock 18C

Sinon uses a Glock 18C fitted with a 33-round magazine as her secondary weapon; in the original novels it was instead a Heckler & Koch MP7. Despite being in Sinon's holster for most of the story, it's easily the least-used weapon belonging to a main character.

Sinon struggles to aim her 18C at Kirito while he pins her arms down. (Ep.8)
After being released, Sinon is shocked that Kirito trusts her enough to simply let her go when she still has her pistol in her hand. (Ep.8)
Sinon again reaches for her Glock... (Ep.9)
...only to drop it. This time, however, her inability to use the gun was not Kirito's doing. (Ep.9)

Colt M1911A1

A sign for the Untouchable! mini-game in Gun Gale Online has an M1911A1 on it. In the real world, Endou, a school bully, later tries to use an airsoft M1911A1 borrowed from her brother to extort money from Shino.

Endou aims her brother's M1911A1 at Shino, looking far too pleased with herself. (Ep.14)
Attempting to pull the trigger, she finds that the gun won't fire and gets mad at it. (Ep.14)
Composing herself, Shino walks over and snatches the M1911A1 from Endou, spinning it into her own hand. The gas-filling port on the bottom of the magazine is visible here. (Ep.14)
Naming it as an M1911, Shino notes that Endou's brother has good taste, though she's not personally a fan. (Ep.14)
She then notes that most guns have a safety, before disengaging it. (Ep.14)
Shino aims the M1911A1, showing the brass "inner barrel", the true barrel of an airsoft gun. (Ep.14)

...and then the slide cycling. (Ep.14)
After reengaging the safety, Shino puts the M1911A1 back in Endou's hand. (Ep.14)

Beretta 92FS

A player is seen firing a Beretta 92FS at the weapon market's firing range. The player's appearance, outfit, (lack of) expression, and choice of weapon all seem like a rather subtle reference to something else.

Beretta 92FS - 9x19mm
Kirito and Sinon pass the Beretta-wielding player; Kirito being very much out of his element. (Ep.4)

Unknown Pistol

Ginrou is seen dual-wielding a pair of unknown pistols in the Gun Gale Online introductory sequence.

Smith & Wesson Model 3

The mascot for the Untouchable! mini-game wields a Smith & Wesson Model 3 Schofield as his weapon. The mini-game requires the player to run up a narrow passage dodging the mascot's fire and successfully reach him. As a side note, the mascot speaks very good English, mostly consisting of taunts.

The mascot fan-fires his Model 3. (Ep.4)
The mascot reloads the break-action Schofield, and does so extremely quickly. (Ep.4)
The mascot aims his Model 3. The rounds in the cylinder can be seen here. (Ep.4)
He prepares to fire the revolver again. (Ep.4)
Entirely out of ammo, the mascot uses his last resort ultimate move: firing a blaster-like shot from his empty Model 3. Note that the cylinders now no longer have bullets visible. (Ep.4)
The mascot spinning his Schofield, ready for another competitor. (Ep.4)

Colt 1873

A player competing in the Bullet of Bullets preliminaries is seen with a pair of Colt 1873s, better known as the Single Action Army. Also, during Sinon's explanation of the BoB tournament, players are seen in a Western face-off drawing Single Action Armys.

Submachine Guns

Calico M900

A Calico M900 in the long barreled, semi automatic carbine configuration without the M951 style foregrip is wielded by Yamikaze, previously the second-highest rated, and now highest-rated player in the Japanese GGO server. Sinon refers the Calico as an "ultra-lightweight machinegun, the Calico M900A". Despite M900A not being an official designation, given that the gun is a full-auto conversion of the civilian M900 model, it's the most appropriate designation given the rest of the Calico family's naming scheme.

Calico M900 - 9x19mm

Assault Rifles

SIG SG 550

Dyne wields a SIG SG 550 as his main weapon, said to be a rare and good weapon in GGO.

Colt M4A1

An M4A1 is used by Arashi, a member of Dyne's squad, as his main weapon; in the novels he is referred to as "the one with the M4". Arashi's M4A1 is fitted with a number of aftermarket parts, including its stock, rail system, and gas block, along with a SureFire foregrip/light combo and a red dot scope. One of the players who attempts to ambush Yamikaze is armed with an M4A1 fitted with an EOTech holosight and foregrip.

Howa Type 89

Although Kyouji Shinkawa is never actually seen with his own main weapon in the show itself, he is seen with a Howa Type 89 on the bluray box cover art. In the novels, Kirito describes him as carrying a "somewhat large machine gun" slung over his shoulder; given Kirito's (lack of) expertise with firearms, this is an appropriate description for a full-size assault rifle like the Type 89.

Howa Type 89 - 5.56x45mm
Spiegel, behind "Death Gun"'s Type 54, holds his Type 89. The muzzle of a G36C can be seen on the far right, though neither Yamikaze nor Pale Rider use one. (BD Artwork)

FN F2000

XeXeeD is seen with an FN F2000 paired with the GL-1 under barrel grenade launcher and standard optical sight, said to be a rare and very good weapon in GGO. Sinon mentions that Yamikaze may be a more skilled player than XeXeeD, but the latter's F2000 and rare armour gave him the edge needed to win the previous BoB.

FN F2000 - 5.56x45mm
XeXeeD with his F2000/GL-1 combo. (Ep.1)

FAMAS G2

Player Usujio Tarako used a FAMAS G2 as his main weapon.

Heckler & Koch G36

A H&K G36 with the built-in 3x scope carry handle is seen when Kirito first enters GGO. The specific variant is unknown as the front end isn't seen.

Heckler & Koch G36V - 5.56x45mm
The GGO player with blonde hair is armed with a G36. The other weapons look to be a shotgun, SMG, assault rifle, and optical gun.

FN SCAR

A BoB player killed by "Death Gun" was using a SCAR rifle, caliber unknown due to the angle. These players were killed by "Death Gun"'s L115A3, not the Type 54 that supposedly murders people in the real world; they're simply "dead" in a traditional video game sense.

FN SCAR-L - 5.56x45mm

...and just keeps firing. (Ep.2)
Behemoth with his Minigun as Kyouji explains to Shino that the M134's ammo limit and weight penalty make it impractical for the BoB tournament. (Ep.3)

FN Minimi

An enemy squad that Dyne's squad engages has a player armed with a FN Minimi to defend against enemy players, as the rest of their squad is armed with optical guns for fighting monsters. Its firepower is a plot point and the gun is called by name frequently.

FN Minimi - 5.56x45mm

A player on the right with the M60E4. (Ep.5)

Browning M1919

BoB tournament competitor Shishigane appears to be wielding a Browning M1919. The novels state he uses only a Jatimatic SMG (to save weight for other equipment, such as armor), however this weapon is clearly not that.

Browning M1919 - .30-06
Shishigane in Sinon's scope, carrying what appears to be a M1919. (Ep.8)

Shotguns

Armalite AR-17

The agility-focused Pale Rider uses an Armalite AR-17 as his only weapon in the BoB tournament. Weighing in at a mere 5.5 pounds due to its almost entirely aluminum design, this shotgun is an excellent (and stylish) choice for Pale Rider's aggressive, agile playstyle. The weapon's 2-round capacity is depicted correctly, as is the bolt locking open when empty.

Armalite AR-17 - 12 Gauge
Pale Rider charges forward with his AR-17, and fires his first shell. (Ep.8)
Pale Rider fires a second shot from his AR-17, showing the residual muzzle flash and spent shell. (Ep.8)
Pale Rider loads a blue shell, presumably a slug. Loading directly into the chamber like this is considerably easier than loading from the bottom, due to the AR-17's strange magazine design (or rather lack thereof). (Ep.8)
Pale Rider's levels his AR-17 on Dyne. (Ep.8)
After reloading off-screen, Pale Rider aims his shotgun at a new target... (Ep.9)
..."Death Gun" himself. (Ep.9)

Remington Model 870

A player is seen racking a Remington Model 870 in the Bullet of Bullets qualifier room.

Remington Model 870 - 12 Gauge
A player racks his 870, ejecting a spent shell. Why an empty casing would have been left in the gun after getting all the way back to a safe zone in a mystery. (Ep.5)

Over And Under Shotgun

A player in the BoB waiting room has an over and under shotgun slung over his shoulder.

Otto Seelig O/U - 12 Gauge
The player behind Kirito holds his shotgun, while the two players to the right point and stare at... a wall. The center player in the group of three on the left also has a pistol in their hand. (Ep.10)

Sniper Rifles

PGM Hécate II

Sinon uses a PGM Hécate II as her main weapon. Shino treats her Hécate as an extension of herself and calls it by name often; it is an inseparable part of her Sinon persona.

PGM Hécate II - .50 BMG
Sinon loads her Hécate II. This shot is the only one from the trailer not used in the show itself. (Trailer)

Sinon prepares to fire her Hécate II. (Ep. 12)

Accuracy International Arctic Warfare Magnum

"Death Gun"'s rifle is a suppressed Accuracy International Arctic Warfare Magnum. According to Sinon, it's nicknamed the "Silent Assassin" in-game for its attached suppressor and very good performance. In the novels it's expressly and repeatedly referred to by its British military designation of L115A3. "Death Gun" uses this rifle to pick off opposing players that he's not trying to kill in a real world murder sense; it's only his Type 54 that's treated as having this ability. The extra rod running underneath the barrel is actually his melee weapon, an estoc; the handle is under the suppressor, while the pointy end is plugged into the usual bipod attachment slot.

Accuracy International AWM - .338 Lapua
An image of the AWM's body as Sinon introduces it. Notice that it does not have Death Gun's custom estoc, as this is simply the baseline Silent Assassin setup featured in GGO. (Ep.8)
"Death Gun" pulls out his AWM to deal with a non-target player... (Ep.10)
...chambers a fresh round... (Ep.10)
...and fires his suppressed rifle at the new threat. (Ep.10)
"Death Gun" fires his AWM... (Ep.12)
...until he's forced to switch to a new target. (Ep.12)

MAS FR F2

The MAS FR F2 makes its anime debut as Sinon's main sniper rifle before she acquired her Hécate II. She's seen using the FR F2 about three months before the main story to defeat a large boss monster all by herself after accidentally running into it. Luckily for her, she could sit out if its effective range and simply snipe it to death, netting her the Hécate II as a reward.

Sinon aims her FR F2 in an underground dungeon. (Ep.2)
Sinon with her FR F2. (Ep.2)
Sinon squeezes the rifle's trigger... (Ep.2)
...and fires, with an impressive muzzle flash and shockwave. (Ep.2)
The barrel end of the FR F2. (Ep.2)
A line of empty FR F2 magazines. It takes a lot to down a boss monster all by yourself. (Ep.2)

Unknown Rifle

A modern scoped rifle is seen held by an entrant in the BoB tournament.

The player's scoped rifle at bottom right. (Ep.5)

Grenades

Model 24 Stielhandgranate

A "modernized" Model 24 Stielhandgranate is used by Keith in the BoB tournament, in an attempt to take out Lion King Richie.

Model 24 Stielhandgranate
Keith's stick grenade flies through the air. (Ep.8)

M18 smoke grenade

Kirito uses a M18 smoke grenade borrowed from Musketeer X to cover his and Sinon's escape from "Death Gun". Though, "borrowing" a grenade, which is how Kirito put it, seems a bit like "borrowing" food...

M18 smoke grenade
A smoke grenade thrown by Kirito on the ground. (Ep.10)
The M18 detonates, creating a smoke screen. (Ep.10)
The same M18 attached to Musketeer X's belt, before it and her Mk. 14 are taken by Kirito. (Ep.10)

Plasma Grenade

A futuristic high-explosive grenade is used by Sinon to end the Bullet of Bullets tournament.

Sinon gives Kirito the high-explosive grenade. Red means activated. (Ep.13)

Weapon Market

The weapon shop in GGO shows only silhouettes and images of the weapons available for purchase, with a weapon materializing upon being purchased by a player. As such, there is a large quantity of firearms that only appear in image form, and these are grouped here for the sake of not flooding the rest of the page with duplicate images and single-image entries.

Weapons shown in the market are grouped by weapon type, with pistols, SMGs/PDWs, assault rifles, shotguns, sniper rifles, rocket launchers, and hand grenades being shown. For the generic silhouette images, each category has four individual models, reused enough times to fill up the board; the silhouette models shown are as follows: Pistols: Nambu Model 60, Beretta 92FS, Colt M1911A1, H&K USP SD. SMG/PDWs: H&K XM8 Compact Carbine, H&K MP5A3, H&K MP5N with tactical light forend and reflex sight, KRISS Vector. Assault Rifles: Colt R0635 (likely because AR-based), AK-47 with scope rail mount, H&K G36C, Colt M4A1 with Aimpoint sight. Shotguns: Maruzen CA870 CQB, two unknown shotguns, Benelli M4. Sniper Rifles: SVD, M40A5, unknown rifle, SMLE. Rocket Launchers: Carl Gustav M2, Mk 153 SMAW, M72 LAW, RPG-7. Hand Grenades: M26, M67, MK3, M116A1 training grenade.

The main promotional image for Bullet of Bullets tournament features a silhouette of a player holding a rifle. It resembles a short-barrel M4-type fitted with a large scope and sling, but it's hard to tell for sure. (Ep.1)
An advertisement for a gun shop, featuring a model holding a two-tone SIG-Sauer P239. Also note the crossed revolvers on the shop's logo, likely Single Action Armys. (Ep.4)
A promotional image featuring an FN P90 floats by Sinon and Kirito. In the spin-off novel series Sword Art Online Alternative Gun Gale Online, main character Karen Kohiruimaki (Username: LLENN) uses a pink-painted P90. The latter half of the spin-off author's pen name, Keiichi Sigsawa, is derived from "SIG-Sauer"; he previously helped as a technical advisor on this very story arc of the anime. (Ep.4)
A wide shot of the market; in the shotgun section, top to bottom, the Maruzen CA870 CQB (airsoft), two unknown shotguns, and Benelli M4 are visible. Also note the giant holographic M16A2, which features a large bulky handguard. (Ep.4)
A close-up of the above shot, better showing the sniper rifles which feature, top to bottom, the SVD, M40A5, an unknown rifle, and the SMLE. (Ep.4)
The Colt R0635, two AK-47s, and G36C (M4A1 is visible in full room shot), plus a detailed image of an AR-15 variant being looked at by Kirito, as Sinon explains why assault rifles are heavier than SMGs, despite being lower-caliber. Or rather, as Sinon attempts to explain the entire history and development of the M16 family first. (Ep.4)
Sinon and Kirito pass by the SMG/PDW section, which is only seen in this shot. The XM8 Compact Carbine, MP5A3, MP5N, and KRISS Vector are all seen here. (Ep.4)
Another angle of the main part of the market, giving a better angle on the pistols; top to bottom they are the Nambu Model 60, 92FS, M1911A1, and USP SD. (Ep.4)
The grenades are seen as Kirito activates his Kagemitsu G4 photon sword; by column they are the M26, M67, MK3, and M116A1 training grenade. (Ep.4)
A spliced image showing most of the detailed pistols, a few misnamed. By column: S&W 915, S&W SD40 VE, Beretta 92FS, Jericho 941 Semi-Compact, Jericho 941, SP-21 Barak, SIG-Sauer SP 2022, H&K HK45, H&K USP, SIG-Sauer P239, SIG-Sauer P250 Compact, SIG-Sauer SP 2009, Minebea P9 (Japanese-produced P220), Minebea P9 in two-tone, SIG-Sauer P228. (Ep.4)
An FN FNX-9, FN L9A1, and FN BDA, with the Carl Gustav M2, Mk 153 Mod 0 SMAW, and M72 LAW to the right. (Ep.4)
The bottom of the same FN-themed column, featuring an FN Five-seveN and FN FNX-45, with an RPG-7 and another SMAW to the right. (Ep.4)
