The '''Springfield Armory XD series of pistols''' was previously imported into the US as the Croatian HS2000 (imported in 2000 by Intrac/HSAmerica). The pistol series began with an indigenous polymer framed pistol designed in 1999 in Croatia called the PHP. After that the design bureau led by Marko Vuković began improving upon their initial design, starting with the HS95 (in 1995) and the HS2000 (in 2000). By 2002, Springfield Armory began importing the pistol under license and renamed the pistol the XD (for X-treme Duty), however, it is still a Croatian pistol. It is now the standard service sidearm of the Croatian Military.

The '''Springfield Armory XD-M''' (stylized as XDM; "M" stands for the match grade barrel and trigger) is an improved version of the Springfield Armory XD. The most noticeable differences between the previous XD models besides the cosmetic and ergonomic changes are the XD-M's interchangeable back-straps and match-grade barrel. Unlike the previous generation of XD handguns, the XD-M does not require pulling the trigger to disassemble the gun, making field stripping safer and faster. The XD-M series of pistols won ''Handgun of the Year'' from American Rifleman in 2009.

Improved '''Springfield Armory XDM''' pistols ("M" stands for the match grade barrel and trigger) closely resemble their predecessor, the HS2000 pistol (most widely known in the United States as Springfield Armory XD). The most noticeable differences between the previous XD models besides the cosmetic and ergonomic changes are the XDMs interchangeable back-straps and match-grade barrel. The first XDM was produced in .40 S&W holding 16 rounds in the magazine. This gun was soon followed by the 9x19mm and .45 ACP. XDM also produced subcompact pistols in .40 S&W and 9x19mm. Exception is that Storm Lake offers a .357 SIG barrel, so owners of XDM-40 can easily change the caliber by simply swapping the barrel. Recently XDM has produced a competition series in 9x19mm, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP with a 5.25" barrel, remotely resembling the 5" tactical XD pistols. Unlike the previous generation of XD handguns, the XDM does not require pulling the trigger to disassemble the gun, making field stripping safer and faster. The XDM series of pistols won ''Handgun of the Year'' in 2009. There's also a 22-round competition magazine mainly used by USPSA shooters. Only 5.25" variants have red/green fiber optic front sights.

In 2020, Springfield Armory introduced the XD-M Elite series with a slew of improvements. These included ambidextrous slide stop, wider and deeper slide serrations, new sights with a cup rear sight and a fiber-optic front sight, a longer and more aggressive grip safety and an extended magazine with a removable larger magazine well. The XD-M Elite also incorporated a new trigger system called the META (Match Enhanced Trigger Assembly), which incorporated an integral trigger overtravel stop, as well as a flat face on the trigger for increased accuracy. Some other improvements only available on certain models included a removable red dot optic plate, flat dark earth tan frame, suppressor height sights and a threaded barrel. The original XD-M models were discontinued in 2021 so Springfield could focus on the XD-M Elite.

[[File:XD9 Mod2 5.jpg|thumb|350px|right|Springfield Armory XD-9 Mod.2 Tactical with 5" barrel - 9x19mm]]
 +
Introduced in 2014, the '''Springfield Armory XD Mod.2''' intended to improve on the original XD design with better ergonomics on both the grip, slide and controls, as well as a slimmer and streamlined shape designed for easier drawing. The Mod.2 series is available in Subcompact, Service and Tactical lengths. Mod.2 also has factory options such as a threaded barrel or a FDE tan frame. The Mod.2 utilizes longer thumb rests than on the other XDs, and takes the same magazines as the original XD models. The two primary features of the Mod.2 series are redesigned, wider slide serrations and improved ergonomic grip texture with various "Grip Zones" for accurate shooting with the shape of the human hand. Some of the other changes made to the design included a red fiber optic front sight, a low-profile steel wedge rear sight, a rounded and undercut trigger guard and a MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny Rail. The XD Mod.2 is also the only XD with slight finger grooves, one of three "zones" for better ergonomic comfort, this front strap is "zone 1", and has medium grip texture to keep the hand on the gun but not be too aggressive on the more sensitive parts of the hand. "Zone 2" is on the back strap and sides, with the most aggressive texture being where the most grip on the pistol is needed. "Zone 3" covers all other areas of the frame that only have a slight texture to supplement the performance of the other two zones while still being comfortable. In spite of a heavy marketing campaign to stir up interest in the new design, the Mod.2 did receive widespread attention, but in a different way than Springfield hoped: "Grip Zone" quickly became an internet meme due to people (incorrectly) assuming that the meaning of the term was to instruct the user where to grip the pistol. Springfield attempted to rectify this by removing "Grip Zone" from the design, but the damage had been done. The brand never fully recovered from the initial bad press and the Mod.2 series was discontinued a few years later in 2020. However, the Mod.2 frame design (albeit without "Grip Zone") is still being used on the remaining XD-S pistols.

The '''Springfield Armory XD-S''' is a single stack variant of the XD intended for concealed carry or for those who prefer a smaller grip diameter. Originally it was released with a 3.3" barrel, but in 2014 a version with a 4" barrel was introduced. Extended magazines are available that increase the capacity by two rounds (for both the 9x19mm and .45 ACP models), which are normally used with a grip sleeve called an "X-Tension".

In addition to the different size and magazine dimensions, the XD-S features further improvements on the design, such as more aggressive developments on the XD-M grip texture, elimination of the striker retaining pin and allowing the user to rack the slide without depressing the grip safety. The XD-S was also offered in .40 S&W but this has now been discontinued. The XD-S currently uses the Mod.2 design for the frame, being the only Mod.2 design left in production.

The Springfield Armory XD pistol series began as a Croatian polymer framed pistol designed in 1999 called the PHP. After that the design bureau led by Marko Vuković began improving upon their initial design, starting with the HS95 (in 1995) and the HS2000 (in 2000). The HS2000 was previously imported into the US as the Croatian HS2000 by Intrac/HSAmerica in 2000. Later, in 2002, Springfield Armory began importing the pistol under license and renamed the pistol the XD (for X-treme Duty). The original Croatian design was adopted as the standard service sidearm of the Croatian Military.

The Springfield Armory XD-M (stylized as XDM; "M" stands for the match grade barrel and trigger) is an improved version of the Springfield Armory XD. The XD-M series of pistols won Handgun of the Year from American Rifleman in 2009.

The first XD-M was produced in .40 S&W, soon followed by the 9x19mm and .45 ACP versions. The XD-M was also produced in subcompact versions, in .40 S&W and 9x19mm. A competition series XD-M was produced in 9x19mm, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP with a 5.25" barrel, remotely resembling the 5" tactical XD pistols. There's also a 22-round competition magazine mainly used by USPSA shooters. Only 5.25" variants have red/green fiber optic front sights. StormLake (based in Tennessee) produces a .357 SIG barrel for the XD-M-40. In 2018, Springfield introduced that the XD-M was now offered in the powerful 10mm Auto chambering.

Springfield Armory XD Mod.2

Springfield Armory XD-9 Mod.2 Tactical with 5" barrel - 9x19mm

Introduced in 2014, the Springfield Armory XD Mod.2 intended to improve on the original XD design with better ergonomics on both the grip, slide and controls, as well as a slimmer and streamlined shape designed for easier drawing.

Springfield Armory XD-S

Springfield Armory XD-S with 3.3" barrel - 9x19mm
Springfield Armory XD-S Mod.2 - .45 ACP

The Springfield Armory XD-S (stylized as XDS) is a single stack variant of the XD intended for concealed carry or for those who prefer a smaller grip diameter.
