Southern Comfort is a 1981 thriller directed by Walter Hill (48 Hrs.) that centers around a National Guard patrol who find themselves being hunted by a group of Cajun locals in the swamps of Louisiana.

Most of the National Guardsmen in the film including Cpl. Hardin (Powers Boothe) and Pfc. Spencer (Keith Carradine) are seen carrying the XM16E1 rifle, which have been modified to only fire blanks.
