Richard III is a 1995 adaptation of Shakespeare's play starring Ian McKellan as the title character. It also stars Annette Bening, Kristin Scott Thomas, Jim Broadbent, Robert Downey, Jr, and Nigel Hawthorne. It was directed by Richard Loncraine.

Richard III (1995)

Though the story remains faithful to Shakespeare's play about the ambitious and twisted Richard of Gloucester, it is set in London during an alternate timeline of the World War II era. Richard's evil plans to gain control of the English throne are paralleled with the rise of facism in Germany and Italy, under Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini, respectively. The same interpretation was used in a successful stage version, on which the film was based and which also starred McKellen.

In both the opening and closing scenes, Richard of Gloucester's (Ian McKellen) weapon of choice is a "Broomhandle" Mauser pistol.
