When the 1930s rolled around, Remington decision-makers decided to boost sales of the Model 8 by giving it a minor overhaul. The barrel and action were left pretty much the same with only a few changes made to the stock and forearm. Increasing the diameter of the grip made it stronger, and doing the same to the forearm made it more hand-filling. Remington introduced the revised version of the Model 8 as the Model 81 Woodsmaster. The .25 Remington chambering was dropped, but the .30, .32, and .35 Remington lived on, and in 1940 the .300 Savage joined them. Those two remained until production of the Model 81 was discontinued in 1950 with almost 56,000 built

Remington also made the Special Police model in the 1940s which have 15 round detachable magazines, intended for the police market. In the 1930s, the Peace Officer's Equipment Company of St. Joseph, Missouri manufactured 15-round detachable magazine conversions for existing Model 8s and 81s in .30 and .35 Remington, aimed at the law enforcement market. A combination of their caliber, magazine size, and semi-automatic fire meant that their firepower is excellent. Remington then wanted to make their own police gun, talking with POE and licensing their design. The Remington Model 81 "Special Police" was a continuation of the POE design, but only a few hundred were sold. They generally have Police Gun markings that identify their status, though exceptions exist. It is also theoretically possible to identify them via their bulkier wooden handguards (the Model 8 conversions had increased handguard sizes, while the Model 81 Special Police has even larger handguards).

Remington Model 81 Special Police - .35 Remington

When the 1930s rolled around, Remington decision-makers decided to boost sales of the Model 8 by giving it a minor overhaul. The barrel and action were left pretty much the same with only a few changes made to the stock and forearm. Increasing the diameter of the grip made it stronger, and doing the same to the forearm made it more hand-filling. The most visible difference is a pistol grip on the stock. Remington introduced the revised version of the Model 8 as the Model 81 Woodsmaster. The .25 Remington chambering was dropped, but the .30, .32, and .35 Remington lived on, and in 1940 the .300 Savage joined them. Production ceased during World War II, and after the war only the .300 Savage and .35 Remington chamberings became available. Those two remained until production of the Model 81 was discontinued in 1950 with almost 56,000 built.

They generally have Police Gun markings that identify their status, though exceptions exist. It is also theoretically possible to identify them via their bulkier wooden handguards (the Model 8 conversions had increased handguard sizes, while the Model 81 Special Police has even larger handguards).
