Persian Lessons is a drama movie directed by Vadim Perelman. The film is essentially based on the content of the 2005 story Erfindung einer Sprache by Wolfgang Kohlhaase and was submitted by Belarus as an entry for the 2021 Academy Awards for Best International Feature Film. In 1942, in German-occupied France, Gilles was captured by the SS and other Jews and sent to a concentration camp. To avoid death, the Belgian helps himself with a trick: he claims not to be a Jew but a Persian. SS officer Klaus Koch overhears this and thinks of his big dream: after the war, he wants to open his own restaurant in Iran, but for that, he has to learn Persian. Gilles now has to teach Koch Fārsī without knowing a single word himself.
