Makarov PM
The Makarov is a very common pistol, once standard issue for the Russian Military. It is easy to find and generally inexpensive, around US$200. The 9x18 round delivers power between the .380 ACP and 9x19mm Luger. its reliability and small size make it popular for concealed carry. Some safety issues have been raised about the free floating firing pin, but even California allows this weapon. Russian Makarovs are even C&R eligible. This pistol continues to be popular throughout the world.

MP-448 Skyph

Calibers: 9x18 Makarov Weight unloaded: 590 g Length: 162 mm Barrel length: 94 mm Capacity: 12 rounds The MP-448 'Skyph' pistol has been developed at Izhevsk Mechanical Plant (IzhMech, also known under the trademark "Baikal") during late 1990s, as an enhanced version of the famous Makarov PM pistol, which is also manufactured by IzhMash. In fact, the Skyph is simply a makarov with a polymer frame - and a few internal maechanism alterations. The MP-448 'Skyph' pistol was initially offered for export sales and for local authorities. But production was halted due to lack of demand. There are no takers for this pistol because there are only marginal improvements in ergonomics and accuracy over the Makarov PM and the Skyph also costs more. Because of this, countries that still use the 9x18mm cartridge are sticking with the Makarov pistol. Russian military and paramilitary forces have switched to the more powerful 9x19mm Parabellum and as such are purchasing larger, more powerful and higher capacity pistols such as the MP-443 Grach and MP-446 Viking (also manufactured by Izhmash).
