Les Misérables is the 1998 film adaptation directed by Bille August of the novel of the same name by Victor Hugo. Jean Valjean, a former chain convict, has worked his way up to factory owner and enjoys high esteem as mayor of a small town near Paris. When Inspector Javert discovers Valjean's true identity, his days of peace seem numbered. However, Jean's love for the sick Fantine forbids him to bow to the lawman's persecutions. After Fantine's death, he raises her illegitimate daughter Cosette and gives her everything he has except the truth about her life on the run.
