Law & Order: Special Victims Unit is the first television spin-off of the series Law & Order. The series (sometimes referred to as Law & Order: SVU) focuses on the detectives working in the NYPD's Special Victims Unit, who investigate primarily sexually-based offenses. For the first 12 seasons, the primary detectives on the series were Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni). Also joining the regular cast were Dann Florek, reprising his role as Captain Don Cragen from the first three seasons of Law & Order, and Richard Belzer as Detective John Munch, a character he had portrayed for seven seasons on the series Homicide: Life on the Street and in a crossover episode of the original Law & Order. Beginning in Season 2, Ice-T (who had portrayed a different character in the Law & Order television film Exiled: A Law & Order Movie) joined the cast as Det. Fin Tutuola. In Season 20, Philip Winchester from Chicago Justice joined the cast portraying Peter Stone, the son of original Law & Order EADA Ben Stone (Michael Moriarty). After an absence of nearly ten years, Meloni would return as Stabler in the 2021 series Law & Order: Organized Crime. Law & Order: Special Victims Unit premiered in 1999 in the US on NBC and launched its 21st season in September of 2019, breaking the record for the longest-running live-action primetime series in US television history, surpassing the 20 seasons of Gunsmoke as well as the 20 plus seasons of the original Law & Order. The series also has had crossover episodes with Chicago P.D. and Chicago Fire, which are also being executive produced by Law & Order creator Dick Wolf.
