Interdynamics MKR Carbine - 4.5x26mmR MKR

The Interdynamics MKR is a Swedish prototype "assault rifle" designed by George Kellgren in the 1980s. Intended as an experiment in small-caliber high-velocity ammunition, the MKR used a unique proprietary 4.5mm cartridge; as this was effectively .22 Winchester Magnum necked down to accept a .177" (4.5mm) solid brass bullet (intended to aid in penetration), it is classified here as a submachine gun rather than the assault rifle it was marketed as. This was also the reason for its unique magazine design - the MKR's 50-round magazine had to be significantly curved due to the rimmed, heavily-tapered cartridge. In spite of the small caliber, the round produced enough pressure to necessitate a locked breech, with the MKR being gas-operated and locking with a vertically-tilting bolt (akin to the FN FAL). The large block behind the magazine well was an ejection chute, which spat cases straight down; Kellgren would later use a similar system in the Kel-Tec RDB. Both full-length "rifle" and shorter-barreled "carbine" models were developed; owing to the scarcity of information about the weapon, it is unclear which one the specifications below refer to.

While theoretically promising, concerns about the terminal effectiveness of the small, light cartridge (especially in something ostensibly meant to fill the role of a conventional assault rifle), and with the reliability of rimfire ammunition in a military context, meant that the weapon garnered little interest, and never entered serial production.
