Hotchkiss M1929 - 13.2×99mm Hotchkiss or 13.2×96mm Hotchkiss

French heavy machine gun from the interwar period. It was used on land, in some tanks (including a Belgian tank), and as an anti-air weapon aboard ships. The Italians produced their own version domestically, the Breda Modello 31, which was used in similar roles. It was also adopted by Japan, both imported and produced domestically. The Imperial Japanese Navy designated it Type 93 and used it aboard ships, while the Army designated it Type Ho (for "Hotchkiss").

After issues with barrel wear, in 1935 Hotchkiss switched the gun from its 13.2x99mm cartridge to 13.2x96mm, with a slightly shorter neck. The Japanese and Italian versions remained in 13.2x99mm, though the IJN's later Type 3 aircraft machine gun, a Browning M2 derivative, would use the updated 13.2x96mm cartridge.
