Girls und Panzer (2012-2013)

Girls Und Panzer (ガールズ&パンツァー Gāruzu ando Pantsā) is a anime series that aired from October 9, 2012 to March 25, 2013.

In an alternate reality, "tankery," a sort of paintball with tanks using live ammunition that somehow never kills anyone, has become a form of sport. Sensha-dō, meaning the "way of the tank", has risen in popularity among women and has been running since the 1920s. Enter Miho Nishizumi, a new transfer student to the Ōarai Girls' Academy. Coming from a family of distinguished Sensha-dō tradition, she transfers to Ōarai, a school not having practised the sport in 20 years, to escape from tankery due to a past event, only for the school to bring back their Sensha-dō program and her two new friends, Saori Takebe and Hana Isuzu, to become very interested in it.

Despite her reasons to leave Sensha-dō, she agrees to attend when urged by the student council and touched by her friends' faith in her. Along the way, Miho picks up Yukari Akiyama and Mako Reizei as friends too. The Ōarai Sensha-dō group then began to salvage tanks left behind by the previously established Sensha-dō organization. After restoring a Panzer 38(t), a Type 89 I-Go, a StuG III, a M3 Lee, and a Panzer IV, the Ōarai Sensha-dō group are organized into teams to begin their competitive lives in the Sensha-dō community, with Miho as the team leader due to her experience.

Miho and her friends use the Panzer IV with her as the commander, Saori as the communicator, Hana as the gunner, Yukari as the loader, and Mako as the driver. With the team organized, the biggest challenge now awaits Miho: bringing the no-name school of Ōarai into the championship of the 63rd National High School Sensha-dō Tournament against other high-tier schools!

The following weapons were used in the anime series Girl Und Panzer:

Submachine Guns

PPSh-41

During Yukari and Riko "Erwin" Matsumoto's discussion of winter boots, a Red Army soldier holding a PPSh-41 is shown.

Karabiner 98k

During the same discussion of winter boots, Wehrmacht soldiers are seen marching with Karabiner 98ks.

M16 rifle series

While Yukari tells Erwin a story about a joint JSDF / US military exercise, US soldiers are seen with a variant of the M16 rifle series. As an aside, Erwin is Hippo Team's (co-)commander and radio operator, however their team doesn't make any further appearance on this page, as their Sturmgeschütz III (StuG III) has no firearms.

M16 - 5.56x45mm

AK-47

In an explanation of the American MREs, Yukari is showing why the MREs are called "Meals Rejected by the Enemy", with soldiers holding stockless AK-47s.

AK-47 - 7.62x39mm
Soldiers with stockless AKs rejecting Yukari's MREs. It's unclear if Yukari is supposed to have a holstered pistol or if it's something else. (OVA #2)

Unknown Assault Rifle

In an explanation of military rations, one scene shows soldiers eating with two holding assault rifles. Though, not enough details seem to shown to make out the exact kind.

Soldiers eating rations by a fire. Closer inspection on the left two soldiers shows the weapon seems to have a triangular front sight on the left guy, but has a sliding stock of a HK on the guy to his right. (OVA #2)

Machine Guns

MG34

The WWII German tanks appearing in the series are all equipped with coaxial and hull mounted MG34s. Kuromorimine Girls High School all-German tank force (Tiger I, Tiger II, Panthers, JagdPanther, etc.) all have tank-mounted MG34s as well.

Saori, Anglerfish Team's radio operator, mans a MG34 without its stock (as is normal when the Panzerlauf is mounted) inside a Panzer IV. Part of the brass catcher seems to be missing here, since if fired like this the gun would simply cough out spent casings into the right-hand wall of the hull. While it may appear she is holding a second gun, this is actually the extended pistol grip of the hull-mounted version: the arm going to a piece of metal on her head is also part of the gun mount, intended to stop the radio operator's head bouncing around when using the optical sight on the hull machine gun while the tank is moving. A MG34 with a stock (which is abnormal when the Panzerlauf is mounted, as noted above) inside Erika Itsumi's Tiger II. Note the feed tray to carry the belt from the ammo pouch mounted on the right-hand side (tank's right, left in the shot) of the turret to the belt feed opening on the MG34's left side: the right side of this feed tray acts as a brass deflector, with a catching bag attached to it. (Ep.11)

ZB-53

Turtle Team's Panzer 38(t) is equipped with two ZB-53 machine guns before being upgraded in Episode 10. St. Gloriana Girls Academy's tanks, which are the British Churchill Mk.VII, Matilda II, and Crusader Mk.II, use the Besa Machine Gun variants of the ZB-53. The Crusader is only seen once (and mentioned by Darjeeling on another occasion), but will appear in combat in the upcoming Girls Und Panzer movie (Crusader Mk.III in the trailer).

Browning M1919A4

Rabbit Team's American M3 Lee tank is equipped with Browning M1919A4s. Saunders University High School exclusively uses American Sherman tanks armed with M1919A4 machine guns on bow and coaxial.

Type 97 Light Machine Gun

Anteater Team's Type 3 Chi-Nu has a Type 97 light machine gun as a secondary weapon, and the Type 97 Chi-Ha tanks from Chi-Ha Tan Academy have a pair each, one on the bow and the other at the rear of the turret like the Type 89. Chi-Ha Tan Academy's Type 97s only make two brief appearances in the show, but will be featured in combat in the movie.

Anzio High School's tanks, which are the Italian L3/35, the Semovente 75/18, and the Carro Armato P40, are equipped with the Breda Modello 38 as their machine guns. The Semoventes do not have their top-mounted machine guns though, and the L3/35 uses the Breda as its main armament.

Machine Guns

Type 97 Light Machine Gun

Anteater Team's Type 3 Chi-Nu and Chi-Ha-Tan Academy's Type 97 Chi-Ha's and Type 95 Ha-Go's have the Type 97 light machine gun as a secondary weapon. While the Type 3 Chi-Nu only have one machine gun on the hull, the Type 97 and 95 have two, one on the hull and one on the turret rear.

Maxim Machine Gun

A single shot of the command tent shows a "Motor Scout" parked next to it. This 1889 quadricycle carried a 7.62 mm Maxim machine gun and shield, 1000 rounds of ammo and 120 miles of fuel, making it the first armored fighting vehicle. It was designed and built by British manufacturer Frederick Reginald Simms, but was quickly superseded on the battlefield by actual tanks.

Who would have brought this to the match, Darjeeling?
