The story takes place in December 1913 in Saint Petersburg. A private investigator Pyotr Chukhontsev (Mikhail Morozov) is asked for help by an inventor Kuklin who is afraid for the safety of his work, a new explosive. Chukhontsev thinks Kuklin to be a madman rather than a real inventor but soon Kuklin is found dead, and Chukhontsev starts his own investigation that leads his to a German diplomat Siegfried Gei (Yuri Bogatyryov) who appears to be a head of a spy ring.
