The Chatellerault Light Machine Gun was adopted in 1922, with the Mle 1924 entering service in 1924 using 7.5x57mm ammunition. This was changed to 7.5x54mm in the Mle 1924 M29 version of 1929 to avoid accidents in case a German 8x57mm cartridge was loaded, and because the 7.5x57mm round had a tendency to explode in much more innovative ways than are acceptable in a firearm. This weapon uses the same operation as the M1918 Browning Automatic Rifle but was considered superior by French troops. The Chatellerault Light Machine Gun inspired the Czech ZB26 Machine Gun which became the British Bren gun.
