The AEK-971 is a Russian prototype assault rifle chambered in 5.45x39mm designed by Sergey Koksharov in 1974. It entered into the Abakan rifle trials, losing out to the AN-94. The AEK-971 is based on previous AK rifles in internal design and layout, but is also equipped with an AO-38 type balanced automatic recoil system to reduce recoil and increase accuracy.
