2012 is a 2009 American science fiction disaster film directed and written by Roland Emmerich. It was produced by Harald Kloser, Mark Gordon, and Larry J. Franco, and written by Kloser and Emmerich. The film was released on November 13, 2009, to commercial success, grossing over $769 million worldwide against a production budget of $200 million, becoming the fifth highest-grossing film of 2009. The film received mixed reviews, with praise for its visual effects, but criticism of its screenplay and runtime; it's also one of the first films to show the Chinese military as a main protagonist in worldwide events. Playing the lead roles are John Cusack and Amanda Peet.

Based on the 2012 phenomenon based on the Mayan calender, in which a range of eschatological beliefs that cataclysmic or transformative events would occur on or around 21 December 2012, its plot follows geologist Adrian Helmsley (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and novelist Jackson Curtis (John Cusack) as they experience the events that the phenomenon predicted; while Curtis tries to re-connect with his ex-wife - the medical student Kate Curtis (Amanda Peet). Danny Glover stars as the US President, Lyndall Grant as California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, with remaining cast including Oliver Platt, Thandiwe Newton, Woody Harrelson, Osric Chau and Morgan Lily.
