Alekhine's Gun
|
Alekhine's Gun is a third-person stealth action video game set during World War II and the Cold War, following series protagonist KGB Colonel Semyon Strogov. Developed and published by Maximum Games, it is the third installment in the Death to Spies series, that began with Death to Spies which was followed by its sequel Death to Spies: Moment of Truth, developed by Haggard Games and released in 2007 and 2009 respectively. The series borrows heavily from the Hitman games.
Alekhine's Gun was released on 1st March 2016 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One; and features open maps with multiple methods to complete levels. Each mission is described as being non-linear in design, featuring multiple ways of completing tasks. The plot features around historical events such as the Bay of Pigs Invasion and the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy. The game has a very Noir athmosphere in both cutscenes and gameplay.
The title name is borrowed from that of a powerful chess formation used by former World Champion Alexander Alekhine in a match against fellow grandmaster Aron Nimzowitsch. The idea consists of placing the two rooks (towers) stacked one behind another and the queen at the rear. This can lead to substantial material loss for the opponent as it places considerable pressure on the "target" of the gun, especially if it is pinned (in this case it was only four moves before resignation).
Originally, the game was title Death to Spies 3: Ghost of Moscow. In this original premise, the player would actually deploy a team of three agents in a third-person version of Commandos gameplay; with each agent having special, unique skills for the tasks at hand. Semyon would have his usual silent assassin skills, while Olga Godunova-Lopes would be a femme fatale who could distract enemies, with the third agent being Viktor Kovalev, a sniper and explosions expert. According to the developers, the idea was based on a Mission Impossible-style task-force, with the trio taking inspiration from Blizzard's The Lost Vikings, but the idea was scrapped due to financial constraints.
