The '''SVD-38''' ('''S'''amozaryadnaya '''V'''intovka '''D'''egtyareva, Obrazets 19'''38''' goda), "Degtyarev self-loading rifle, model of 1938" is based on the design of the breech (carried out with two larvae (stops) symmetrically located in the side walls of the receiver) from the 1932 rifle sample made by V.A. Degtyarev.

The '''Degtyaryov AVD-26''' (RUS: Автоматическая винтовка Дегтярева 1926 года / '''A'''vtomaticheskaya '''V'''intovka '''D'''egtyareva 19'''26''' goda | ENG: Degtyarev automatic rifle 1926). Following the First World War, most countries recognized that rifles with manual loading for infantry forces should be replaced with self-loading ones. The USSR started this work back in 1925, while in 1926 Vasily Degtyarev, a student of the famous Russian gunsmith Vladimir Fyodorov, developed his automatic rifle with gas removal automatics and a simple and reliable cutoff with the help of a couple of recoil lugs moving sideways. This rifle shot both single shots and in bursts; movable magazines had a capacity of 5 to 20 cartridges, and it came with an immovable spike bayonet with three positions: marching (spike backward), combat (spike forward) and intermediate where the spike is aimed downward and the bayonet could be used as a bipod for prone firing. This rifle was not mass-produced; however, it became an ancestor to the first purely Soviet small arms, the [[RPD light machine gun]] that inherited the automatics and the design of the cutoff unit from the rifle. In 1930, the weapon was recalibrated to the 7.62x54 R cartridge and a muzzle brake was used. It was the basis for creating the SVD-30 semi-automatic variant.

The 1938 was developed at TsKB-2. It featured an attached bayonet knife, a 10-round removable magazine, and a UVP rifle optical sight.
