+ | Red Dead Redemption is the 2010 installment in the Red Dead series. It is not a proper sequel to Red Dead Revolver, but instead a completely new game set in a dynamic open Western world akin to the Grand Theft Auto series. Redemption is set 1911 during the twilight of the Wild West era and tells the story of former outlaw-turned-bounty hunter John Marston, who is made to take up his guns again by the US Government to track down the remaining members of his old gang in exchange for his family's freedom. Marston's mission takes him into a fictionalized region of the Southwestern United States and northern Mexico in pursuit of his old comrades. Horses and horse-drawn carts and wagons, and trains are the main methods of transportation, and the game features a gunslinger-themed mechanic known as "Dead Eye" where time slows down to allow Marston time to mark and engage targets.
+ | |||
+ | Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare is a non-canon offshoot DLC that was released in later 2010. In Undead Nightmare, a zombie plague envelops the open world frontier and John must set out to fight it and find a cure to save his family.

John Marston fires the gun and other single action revolvers by cocking the hammer back but it is done very quickly and is very difficult to notice unless the camera is angled close to the gun while firing where John moves his thumb after each shot and a clicking sound is heard. The only time the revolver is fired without pulling the hammer back is in cutscenes. It uses Revolver Ammunition. It seems that from a technical point of view, it uses the same reloading system as all other revolvers in the game, which actually means that the ejector rod is never used, and discharged cartridges disappear in a mysterious way and new rounds are simply laid in their place. |

It holds nine shots, and the underbarrel shotgun is not usable. It is one of the rare (or just really expensive) weapons. The Mauser C96 seen in-game fires fully-automatically; it is anachronistic as the first full-auto C96 variant did not exist before the late 1920s. The fire-rate in multiplayer is much lower than in single player, most likely for balance reasons.

It is first available in Mexico while doing a side quest, which leads into a gang hideout side mission. It holds an underloaded 12 rounds instead of a more accurate 15, and has a faster firing and reload speed than the Winchester Repeater (although in real life it should be exactly the opposite), though the stopping power is equal. It uses Repeater Ammunition. The reloading process itself is extremely strange, since the lever leans down and the rounds are loaded into a nonexistent port on the right side of the receiver. Likely due to confusion between the Henry and Winchester Model 1866, the HUD icon for the Henry much more closely resembles the Winchester with its characteristic loading gate and handguard. |

The "Carcano Rifle" in-game is depicted as an M91/38 Short Rifle very similar to the one used by Lee Harvey Oswald. This is rather anachronistic, seeing as the M91/38 model wasn't produced until (as the name implies) 1938; a more appropriate choice would be an original M91 Long Rifle or similar Mannlicher M1895 carbine. It is first available for purchase from the gunsmith in Blackwater. It is basically a combination of the Rolling Block Rifle and Bolt Action Rifle. It holds five shots rather than six in real life and uses Sniper Rifle Ammunition. Interestingly, the rifle is depicted in game as having a straight bolt handle, which would make it impossible to cycle the weapon with the scope attached. The use of stripper clips would also be impossible with the scope mounted; the real sniper Carcanos used a left-shifted scope for this. An anachronistic feature of the Carcano's scope is it has a duplex style reticule, as most scopes produced in the day were wire cross hairs. In other words, the reticule should have looked much like the Remington Rolling Block's scope reticule. | The "Carcano Rifle" in-game is depicted as an M91/38 Short Rifle very similar to the one used by Lee Harvey Oswald. |
Red Dead Redemption is the 2010 installment in the Red Dead series.
Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare is a non-canon offshoot DLC that was released in later 2010. In Undead Nightmare, a zombie plague envelops the open world frontier and John must set out to fight it and find a cure to save his family.
A prequel released as the numbered sequel, Red Dead Redemption II released in 2018.
The following weapons appear in the video game Red Dead Redemption:
Handguns
Single Action Army
A Single Action Army, referred to as the "Cattleman Revolver", is the first handgun that the player starts with.
Volcanic Repeater
The Volcanic Repeater is available at the gunsmith in Armadillo and is called the "Volcanic Pistol" in game. It behaves a lot like the Winchester, but with much less range and is more powerful than the Cattleman, which is unusual considering the "Rocket Balls" it fired in reality are considered weaker than modern day .25 ACP. Uses Pistol Ammunition. When reloading, rounds are loaded into the ejection port instead of the front of the magazine.
Smith & Wesson Schofield Model 3
The player is automatically given a Smith & Wesson Schofield Model 3 by Landon Ricketts at the beginning of the Mexico portion of the game, called the "Schofield Revolver" in-game. It's basically a direct upgrade over the Cattleman, and is almost as strong as the Volcanic. It uses Revolver Ammunition.
Borchardt C-93
The Borchardt C-93 is the first "new age" handgun available as simply the "Semi-Automatic Pistol". It holds 7 shots in its magazine (despite the C-93's mags holding 8 in reality) and can be first purchased at the gunsmith in Escalera once the player gets to Mexico. It is also Dutch van der Linde's preferred sidearm. A free one can be obtained if the player clears out the Fort Mercer bandit hideout after the mission 'We'll Be Together In Paradise'. Uses Pistol Ammunition.
The Colt New Army & Navy appears, named the "Double Action Revolver" in-game. It is the fastest firing revolver in the game, and also happens to be good in the way of damage. It also reloads a little faster than the Schofield and LeMat. It becomes available after completing the Tesoro Azul hideout and uses Revolver Ammunition. There is also a gold-plated version.
LeMat Revolver
A LeMat Revolver (referred to by its real name) is available at the gunsmith's shop in Escalera after the Mexican missions. It holds nine shots, and the underbarrel shotgun is not usable. It is incorrectly depicted as a break action revolver like the Schofield, even though the gun is still visibly a cap and ball revolver, which would make a top-break mechanism nonsensical. It uses Revolver Ammunition and is one of the rare weapons.
Mauser C96
The Mauser C96 is called the "Mauser Pistol" in game. It holds an incorrect 15 shots (instead of 10) and is first available at the gunsmith in Blackwater. It uses Pistol Ammunition.
FN Model 1903
Edgar Ross gives John a FN Browning Model 1903 with pearl grips in the mission 'Bear One Another’s Burdens'. Called the "High Power Pistol" in-game (not to be confused with the later Browning Hi-Power), it is distinguishable from the Colt 1903 Hammerless by its longer barrel and slide. It uses Pistol Ammunition and incorrectly holds one more round in its magazine than the real Model 1903.
Rifles
Spencer Model 1860 Carbine
The first rifle obtained is the Spencer Model 1860 Carbine, called the "Repeating Carbine" in-game. It is automatically granted in 'New Friends, Old Problems', the second mission in the game. The weapon has a somewhat slow rate of fire compared to later repeaters. It holds seven shots and uses Repeater Ammunition. Despite the fact that the real Spencer is loaded from a tube magazine in the butt-stock, the game depicts the rifle as a seven-round repeating breech-loader.
Winchester 1892 Saddle Ring Carbine
The Winchester 1892 Saddle Ring Carbine is called the "Winchester Repeater" in-game. This is the second rifle that the player gets, it can either be purchased from the gunsmith in Armadillo or received during an early mission soon after. Holds 10 shots and is a very reliable long arm for a good portion of the game. It uses Repeater Ammunition.
1873 Trapdoor Springfield Cavalry Carbine
A 1873 Trapdoor Springfield Cavalry Carbine can be purchased from the gunsmith in Thieves' Landing and is called the "Springfield Rifle" in-game and as such, uses Rifle Ammunition. The only real flaw to the carbine is that the expensive Rifle Ammunition it uses is largely unavailable on enemies until late into the Mexico missions. It unrealistically holds four shots instead of one and it appears that John Marston works the gun like a bolt action between shots (he flips the trapdoor up closes it then the hammer gets cocked with no animation), however it could be possible that John rapidly inserts a round while "cycling" the carbine.
Krag-Jørgensen
The Krag-Jørgensen can first be purchased at the gunsmith in Escalera, but can be seen in the hands of Mexican soldiers long before then, and is called the "Bolt Action Rifle" in game. It reloads all rounds at once, something semi-possible by dropping several cartridges into the Krag's loading gate or by using an aftermarket device, though the loading gate stays closed in the in-game animation. The firing speed is about the same as the Henry Repeater but the range is slightly improved. It holds five shots and uses Rifle Ammunition.
Henry 1860
The player can obtain a Henry 1860, known as the "Henry Repeater" in-game. This is the third repeating rifle that the player gets.
Remington Rolling Block Sporting Rifle
A Remington Rolling Block Sporting Rifle fitted with a "Long Malcolm" scope is the player's first sniper rifle and is called the "Rolling Block Rifle" in-game. The player picks it up during a job for the Mexican military. It's single shot and uses Sniper Rifle Ammunition.
Evans Repeating Rifle
An Evans Repeating Rifle is typically the last repeater acquired and is classified as a rare weapon according to Rockstar's website. It is called the "Evans Repeater" in-game. It is first available for purchase at the gunsmith in Blackwater. It carries 22 rounds, giving it the highest magazine capacity in the game, save for the unlimited ammo machine guns. In reality, the .44 Evans Long model has a capacity of 26 rounds, whereas the .44 Evans Short carried 34. It has practically the same power as the Winchester and Henry but with just double the capacity and a somewhat faster reload speed. It uses Repeater Ammunition.
Carcano M91/38 Short Rifle
Sharps 1874 Long Range
The Sharps 1874 Long Range is called the "Buffalo Rifle" in-game. It is the most powerful rifle in the base game (hence the name) and can be purchased after getting Rank 5 in the Master Hunter challenges. The weapon reloads pretty fast and only fires one shot at a time. When used from cover there is an annoying glitch where John will reload while exposed to gunfire rather than loading another shot while in cover. It uses Rifle Ammunition. This rifle is a reference to the movie The Outlaw Josey Wales which was a big inspiration for the game, including John Marston’s likeness to Josey.
Modified Mauser 1918 T-Gewehr Anti-Tank Rifle
The DLC Pack "Liars and Cheats" contains a new weapon called the "Explosive Rifle", which appears to be a modified Mauser 1918 T-Gewehr with the metal bipod and wooden pistol grip removed, as well as having a shorter barrel. The rifle is the most powerful firearm in the game and causes instant overkill upon impact, vaporizing humans and most animals. As its name implies, it uses explosive rounds instead of its real armor-piercing ammunition. The game describes it as an experimental weapon, although the T-Gewehr was not developed until 1917, and the first use of the tanks that led to its appearance itself happened a year earlier. It can be purchased at the Blackwater gunsmith for a base price of $10,000- making it the most expensive item in the game.
Shotguns
Colt Model 1878
A Colt Model 1878 double barrel shotgun can be bought at the Armadillo gunsmith, found at the Tesoro Azul hideout, or acquired during the missions 'A Frenchman, a Welshman, and an Irishman' and 'Remember My Family'. Referred to as simply "Double-barreled Shotgun", it has the tightest pellet spread of any shotgun in the game, with the obvious disadvantage of being limited to only two shells before having to reload. Rapidly tapping the fire button will lead to Marston firing both barrels at once for increased damage output.
Sawed-Off Shotgun
A Sawed-Off Shotgun can be bought at the Thieves' Landing Gunsmith or acquired at the Pike's Basin gang hideout. In Undead Nightmare, it's given to John by Marshal Johnson. Like its full-sized counterpart, the sawed-off can discharge both barrels at once by rapidly pressing the fire button.
Browning Auto-5
The Browning Auto-5 shotgun, called the "Semi-auto Shotgun" in-game, holds 5 rounds and can be bought from the Gunsmith at Escalera for $1,000 after completing "We Shall Be Together in Paradise" and unlocking access to Mexico. It is considered a "rare weapon", even though it is typically obtained before the "common" Pump-action Shotgun.
Winchester Model 1897
A Winchester Model 1897 is obtained during the mission 'And the Truth Will Set You Free', used by one of Dutch's gangsters. A gold version is available in multiplayer. The inventory icon for the weapon depicts it with a 20 inch "Riot" barrel, but the in-game model features the longer "Field" barrel. It has a capacity of six shells, the highest in its class,
Blunderbuss
A Blunderbuss is available in the DLC Undead Nightmare. This antique weapon (as Marston himself reminds) is loaded with pieces of the undead, and causes the zombies to explode. It's good for taking out small groups and clusters in this regard, but the downside is that no undead pieces can be collected for crafting blunderbuss ammo.
Others
Gatling Gun
The Gatling Gun is first used in the mission 'The Assault on Fort Mercer.' It is not fitted with any kind of feeding device and has no visible supply of ammo: in line with video game logic, this means it cannot run out of ammunition.
Cannon
First used in the mission 'The Gates of El Presidio' where it is where it is mounted on several locations throughout the fortress. It is depicted as a breech loader firing cast iron balls and seems to based of off large caliber Armstrong Guns. It can also be used in multiplayer and the DLC Undead Nightmare.
Browning M1917
Despite being listed by the game makers as the anachronistic Browning Gun, the weapon is depicted as sharing many qualities with the more period appropriate Maxim gun. It is used mounted on a prototype Minerva armored truck in the mission 'And You Will Know The Truth' and damaged at the end of the mission when the armored truck tips over. Dutch van der Linde uses one at his fort in Cochinay against John Marston and the US Army in the mission 'And The Truth Will Set You Free'. One can also be found on the roof of a building in El Matadero.
Cut Weapons
The Colt 1851 Navy appeared incorrectly as the "Walker Revolver" before it was cut from the game. Its texture can be found in the game files.
Smith & Wesson No. 3 Russian Model
What appears to be a Smith & Wesson No. 3 Russian Model appeared as the "Top Break Revolver" before it was cut from the game, possibly because of its resemblance to the Schofield. Its texture can be found in the game files.
