Degtyaryov RPD
Degtyaryov RD-44
At the end of 1943, work began on the creation of light machine guns powered by the new 7.62mm mod. 1943 (7.62x41mm). Field tests of these cartridges have shown that the destructive power of the bullet and the accuracy of fire are satisfactory at distances of up to 800 m. This range, as combat experience has shown, is completely sufficient for light machine guns. Degtyarev, Simonov, Sudaev and other designers participated in the design of light machine guns using the new cartridge. In 1944, during competition tests, a sample of Degtyarev's design, known as the RD-44 (RUS: Ручной Дегтярёва 1944 года / Ruchnoy Degtyarova 1944 goda | ENG: Manual Degtyareva 1944), came to light. Until the end of the war, RD-44 machine guns were produced in small series and were tested by the military. Shortly after the war, a modernized version of this machine gun, chambered for the now standard 7.62x39 mm cartridge, was adopted by the Soviet Army as the (RUS: Ручной пулемёт Дегтярёва / Ruchnoy Pulemot Degtyarova | ENG: Degtyarev light machine gun).
