Dawn of the Dead is a 1978 sequel to 1968's Night of the Living Dead. Set after the original outbreak, it sees society begin to collapse. Two news station workers - a intern named Francine (Gaylen Ross), and a news chopper pilot named Stephen (David Emge) decide to take the station's helicopter and leave the city before it's overrun. After meeting up with Philadelphia SWAT officers Peter (Ken Foree) and Roger (Scott H. Reiniger), they soon run low on fuel and set up shop in a local mall overrun with the undead. The movie is now considered to be one of the greatest horror movies made as well as the greatest zombie movie ever made. It was followed by four official sequels and was the inspiration for the 2004 remake

The following weapons appear in the 1978 film Dawn of the Dead:

SPOILERS.jpg WARNING! THIS PAGE CONTAINS SPOILERS!

Revolvers

Arminius HW-5T Revolver

The Arminius HW-5T is a common revolver in the movie, used by the apartment dwellers in the beginning as well as the Philadelphia SWAT team, including Peter Washington (Ken Foree) and Roger DeMarco (Scott H. Reiniger). The usage of the Arminius HW-5T Revolver is likely supposed to stand in for .38 Special revolvers or the even Colt Python even though SWAT teams in the US during the 1970s to 1980s are supposed to be armed with the M1911A1. For the Philadelphia SWAT officers they carry their Arminius HW-5T Revolver in black M3 shoulder rig holsters.

Arminius HW-5T - .22 Long Rifle. Note the elongated and staggered ejector rod/cylinder release, evident in the revolvers seen in the film.
"Jesus Christ, there's a thousand pigs!"
Rico fires at the SWAT team on the roof with his revolver.
Roger trains his weapon on Rico in a tense standoff.
A young SWAT team member (John Rice) commits suicide with his Arminius. Note the elongated and staggered ejector rod/cylinder release.
Peter shoot several zombies in the apartment basement.
A distraught Peter reloads his Arminius HW-5T while trying to deal with the zombies in the basement.
Wooley goes "ape shit" and starts killing random apartment inhabitants, HW-5T in one hand.

Röhm RG-38

When the Project Apartments residents charge the SWAT team, Martinez (Joe Shelby) used a nickel-plated snubnose Röhm RG-38. While waiting for Roger (Scott H. Reiniger) to return as a zombie Peter (Ken Foree) appears to be holding another (more than likely the same) nickel-plated snubnose Röhm RG-38. This same revolver is seen earlier in Roger's hands.

Röhm RG-38 - .38 Special. Note the revolver used in the film is a 3 inch barreled nickel variant. It can be differentiated by it's medium sized ejector rod, which is longer than a FIE Titan Tiger's, but shorter and more evenly cylindrical than a Arminius HW-5T's.
Martinez (Joe Shelby) puts a hole in one of Roger's teammates, while Rico falls back against the building, evading the fight.
Martinez fires another shot before going down.
A weakened Roger rides in the cart, Röhm in hand.
Peter waits for Roger to reanimate while armed with the Röhm from earlier.

Röhm RG-66

The revolver that Stephen finds in the maintenance office is a Röhm RG-66. He uses it throughout the film. In a continuity error, Wooley's Arminius turns into Stephen's Röhm RG-66.

Röhm RG-66 - .22 Magnum. This version is fitted with a so called 'Quick Draw' barrel length (4.75 inches). The revolver seen in the film has a longer 'Artillery' length barrel (7.5 inches).
Stephen finds the Röhm RG-66 while rummaging through the maintenance office
Stephen ejects a spent round with the Röhm ejection rod.
The Röhm RG-66 lays next to Wooley's 916A.

Ruger Single Six

A Ruger Single Six is seen loaded by Stephen aka "Flyboy".

Early variant of the Ruger Single Six with the black plastic grips (and Ruger Logo) - .22 LR (1953-1973). This is an early 3 screw model that was made between 1953-1962. The revolver in the film is fitted with a brass frame.
Stephen holds the Ruger Single Six.
Stephen begins frantically loading the Ruger Single Six while the zombies bang on the shop's gate.

Herters SA22

A Herters SA22 with pearl grips is carried around by Francine (Gaylen Ross) for most of the movie.

Herters SA22 - .22 LR
Fran checks her Herters SA22 when she waits for the others in the Shopping Mall.
Fran holds her Herters SA22 while she waits for the others to return up the stairwell.
Bored out of her mind, Francine plays dress up and poses with her Herters SA22 in the makeup mirror to kill the hours waiting inside the Shopping Mall.

Colt 1851 Navy

During the gun shop scene, Peter is seen holstering what appears to be a pair of Colt 1851 Navy black powder revolvers. More than likely they are replicas manufactured by Uberti or Pietta. The brass frames indicate they are "Confederate" models and the stepped cylinders indicate they are .44 caliber. A brass framed .44 1851 never existed during the American Civil War, however.

Peter cocks two of them...
then dry fires them...
before finally holstering them in a rather impressive Western rig.

Harrington & Richardson Model 632

A Harrington & Richardson Model 632 is seen in the gun case along with several other pocket pistols.

Colt Python

During the gun store scene there is a brief glimpse of a Colt Python in the display case. It is taken by Peter but never used.

Pistols

Colt M1911A1

The Police Commander (Fred Baker), Blades (Tom Savini), and Peter (Ken Foree) all carry the M1911A1 in a black M3 shoulder holster.

Colt M1911A1 Pistol - .45 ACP
"I'm giving you three minutes Martinez!"'
The Police Commander (Fred Baker) with a M1911A1 holstered in a M3 shoulder rig holster while negotiating with the apartment dwellers.
"Hello!"' Blades (Tom Savini) is seen with a M1911A1 in a similar shoulder (or most likely the same rig) to the police commander as he sprays seltzer water on the zombies. The holster appears to be looped on his jackets left epaulette instead of the right epaulette or inside his jacket over his right shoulder for that matter like the Police Commander, in which makes the holster angled away from instinct drawing.
Blades (Tom Savini) draws his M1911A1 while choke holding on a zombie. The awkward position of the rig results in Blade's struggle to draw his 1911 effectively.
Peter with a M1911A1 in his M3 holster. It is again similar to the previous two, possibly indicating the same rig was used for all of these characters.

Remington 1866 Derringer

Peter (Ken Foree) contemplates committing suicide with this gun until he decides to go with Fran (Gaylen Ross) to help protect her and her unborn baby. The derringer in the store is chambered in .41, where the one Peter (Ken Foree) uses is chambered in .22.

Shotguns

Smith & Wesson 916A

The Smith & Wesson 916A shotgun is seen during the SWAT raid at the beginning of the film, carried by Wooley and other SWAT officers. Later on, the shotgun returns in the hands of one of the bikers raiding the mall.

Smith & Wesson 916A - 12 gauge
"Come on, this is a waste of my time!"
Wooley (Jim Baffico) anxiously waits for the shooting to begin.
Wooley opens up with his 916A.
The SWAT officers fire teargas from the 916A.
The young SWAT member (John Rice) picks up Wooley's dropped guns left on an apartment floor, including his 916A.
A SWAT officer restrains a civilian while clearing the apartment.
The young SWAT officer tries to use Wooley's 916A to deal with a reanimated zombie, but he realizes he's out of ammo.
During the raid, a biker is seen firing a 916A.

Mossberg 500

A Mossberg 500 can be seen along the many other firearms handed out to the bikers.

Single Shot Breach loading Shotgun

A 12 Gauge Single Shot Shotgun is seen in the hands of Martinez's men in the beginning of the film, also in the hands of "rednecks".

One of Martinez's men gets blasted by SWAT. Of course the wisdom of 'charging' a SWAT team when all you have is a single shot breach loading shotgun is questionable.

Ithaca 37 Deerslayer

An Ithaca 37 Deerslayer is seen in the gunshop.

Submachine Guns

Thompson M1921AC

One of the bikers, Mousey (Larry Vaira) who invade the mall near the end is seen using a M1921AC Thompson Submachine Gun with a 50 round drum magazine. Another biker is also seen with one.

Later on, said biker and his Thompson are loaded with a drum magazine.

MP40

The MP40 submachine gun is seen very briefly when the bikers first raid the mall.

A biker in the rear behind Mousey has the MP40 strapped to him.

Rifles & Carbines

Adler-Jager AP-74

The standard issue rifle to both the Philadelphian SWAT team and the US National Guardsmen in the movie is the Adler-Jager AP-74s standing in for the actual M16. Many shots reveal the AP-74s' very small magazine and different flashhider. For most of the movie, the AP-74's are never actually fired, more mimed fired by the actors with sound and muzzle flash added afterwards. The rifles are used by Peter (Ken Foree) and Roger (Scott H. Reiniger) from the beginning of the SWAT apartment raid all the way upon their arrival at the mall.

Adler-Jager AP-74 rifle - .22 LR. Note the sharply angled three prong flash hider and the forward assist, and the small .22 LR magazine that protrudes under the 'fake' 20 round magazine.
Real XM16E1 with 20 round magazine for comparison - 5.56x45mm
Roger (Scott H. Reiniger) trains his Adler-Jager AP-74 on Rico in a tense standoff in the film's opening SWAT raid.
A SWAT team member hands out gas-masks. AP-74 slung over the officer's back.
Peter (Ken Foree) aims his Adler-Jager AP-74 at Steven.
Peter and Roger disembark onto the mall roof, AP-74's in hand.
Roger clears the mall with his AP-74. This shot shows off the rather small .22 ejection port on the AP-74.
Peter whips the AP-74 while at the airfield.
Peter reloads the AP-74. The .22 mag can be seen clearly at the bottom of the shot.
A nice side view of the AP-74 while Peter drives a truck, showing off the rather small .22 mag in the fake 20 round magazine.
Soldiers of the 28th Infantry Division (Keystone Patch) aka "Pennsylvania National Guard" with AP-74's meant to stand in for M16A1's. There is a mix of actual US Army National Guardsmen and actors. The difference between them is striking - The 'actors' look like long haired "college age students" with plain helmet liners only (no steel pot), non-subdued 28th Infantry Div. patch (red Keystone), and anachronistic Green M43 10-pocket M1 Garand Belts. The Real National Guardsmen have 'Nam-era leaf Pattern Helmet covers, shorter hair, and LCE (ALICE) web gear with correct nylon M16 ammo pouches.

Savage Model 99

Peter (Ken Foree) takes a scoped Savage 99 lever action rifle, chambered in .300 Savage, from the gun store for his personal use. Later on, Peter uses the rifle to great effect against the bikers when they invade the mall.

Savage 99 with scope - .300 Savage
"The only man that could miss with this gun is the sucker with the bread to buy it."
Peter tries out the scope on his newly acquired Savage Model 99.
Peter chambers a round on his Savage Model 99, showcasing the rifle's lever action assembly.
Peter's view through the Savage 99's scope. Peter tells Stephen not to fire through the security doors, lest the ricochets 'chase them around' in the store, however, the metal in the security doors are a combination of aluminum and soft steel, easily punctured by any of the high powered rifle ammo.
Ammo boxes of .300 Weatherby Magnum ammunition (The words 300 magnum are clearly seen on the box and the artwork of the casing says "Weatherby"). Since the Savage Model 99 was never chambered in .300 Wby Mag, this is a error.
A bandoleer of .303 British soft points is loaded up; note the rimmed case. Even though a Lee-Enfield is pictured in the shop, this is an error since no .303 British chambered guns are used.
Peter goes biker hunting with his scoped Savage Model 99 Rifle when the biker's begin their raid.

Marlin Model 983

Stephen originally uses a Marlin Model 983 rifle but is incompetent with it. During the sequence when Roger (Scott H. Reiniger) and Peter (Ken Foree) are venturing forth from the safety of the mall to get the trucks Fran (Gaylen Ross) provides cover fire from the roof of the mall with it.

A sporterized Karabiner 98k is found in the gun store and is handled by Steven.

Steve gets a feel for the rifle, though he never uses it.

Remington 700

Peter is seen carrying a unscoped Remington Model 700 BDL rifle after landing on the mall's rooftop. Peter is also seen carrying the Remington rifle upon entering in the mall, however sometimes it changes with Roger carrying the rifle and with Peter carrying the Winchester Model 70 in continuity error. Later after stocking up at the gun store, Stephen is seen wielding a Remington 700 rifle during the locking of doors around the mall.

Remington Model 700 - .308 Winchester
A weakened Roger rides in the cart, with the Remington 700 resting next to the rifle round bandolier.

Winchester Model 70

Roger is seen carrying an unscoped Winchester Model 70 rifle upon meeting up with Stephen at the airfield / dock. Peter is also seen carrying the Winchester rifle upon entering in the mall which sometimes changes to a Remington Model 700 BDL in continuity error with Roger. The Winchester Model 70 was carried by US SWAT units of varying states during the 1970s and 1980s is actually accurate, most of the time they were fitted with scopes.
