The film, which was adapted from the Pierre Boulle novel, was directed by Franklin J. Schaffner (Patton) and would spawn 4 sequels, a 1974 television series, a 2001 "reimagining" directed by Tim Burton and as well as a new "reboot" series of films which began with 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Planet of the Apes was also considered the first of Heston's unofficial trilogy of post apocalyptic films which included The Omega Man and Soylent Green.
