M1917 Enfield

Despite the fact that the cadets were seen marching with Garands earlier, an M1917 Enfield is the rifle that Doug Neidermeyer (Mark Metcalf) is seen taking up and loading a live round into during the parade frenzy.

While the cadets were seen marching with Garands, an M1917 Enfield is the rifle that Doug Neidermeyer (Mark Metcalf) is seen taking up and loading a live round into. All ROTC drill rifles are deactivated before being released to ROTC units to avoid scenarios such as this.
Neidermeyer fires the rifle at Flounder. Theoretically, the bullet that shattered the seltzer bottle should've gone through Flounder as well, and most likely through anyone standing behind him.
