Kg m/40

Kulsprutegevär m/1940 - 6.5x55mm Swedish

The Kulsprutegevär m/1940 (Kg m/40) is a Swedish light machine gun. It is based on the German Knorr-Bremse machine gun, which was designed by Hans Lauf in 1933, adopted by the Waffen-SS as the MG35/36A and produced in limited numbers. Sweden purchased the license for this weapon, but it was redesigned from the LH-33 prototype for the 6.5x55mm cartridge. Svenska Automatvapen AB manufactured about 5,000 m/40s between 1940 and 1943. As the weapon showed poor reliability, it was soon transferred from the Army to the Home Guard and withdrawn from service after the WWII. In 1944, 480 Kg m/40s were donated to the Norwegian troops (called "police units") in Sweden.

The Kg m/1940 is a gas operated, air-cooled, automatic-only (unlike the selective-fire German version) weapon that fires from an open bolt.

Note: the Kulsprutegevär m/1940 was classified as a light machine gun on Swedish service, and no reliable source refers to it as an "automatic rifle".

Knorr–Bremse MG 35/36

Knorr–Bremse MG 35/36 - 7.92x57mm Mauser

The Knorr–Bremse MG 35/36 was based on the Swedish Kg m/40 design, which was patented in 1933. Despite this, the Kg M/40 did not enter production in Sweden until 1940, so the MG 35/36 entered production before the weapon on which it was based. It was manufactured under license by Knorr-Bremse AG of Lichtenberg and was tested by the Wehrmacht in 1935, but was not adopted. Although it was not formally adopted by Germany, they sent a limited quantity to Finland during the Winter War in aid of Nazi Germany in 1939. They were used by the Finnish Army in early 1940. The only use of this weapon during World War II was by the SS, which fielded them in small quantities on the Eastern Front.

The MG 35/36 was a gas-powered light machine gun firing from a hinged bolt. The only design difference between it and the Swedish Kg M/40 on which it was based was the chambering, as the MG 35/36 was built around the standard German 7.92×57mm Mauser cartridge, rather than the Swedish 6.5×55mm cartridge. It was fed from a small 25-round box magazine from the MG 13 machine gun, which was fed on the left side of the receiver and did not have the option of feeding via a belt. The external differences include a different pistol grip and a different handle for carrying the weapon.
