The KPV machine gun (KPV is an initialism for Krupnokaliberniy Pulemyot Vladimirova (Vladimirov's large-caliber machine gun), in Russian as Крупнокалиберный Пулемёт Владимирова, or КПВ) is a Soviet designed 14.5x114mm-caliber heavy machine gun, which first entered service as an infantry weapon (designated PKP) in 1949. In the 1960s, the infantry version was taken out of production because it was too large and heavy. It was later redesigned for anti-aircraft use, as it showed excellent results as an AA gun against low flying aircraft, with a range of 3,000 m (9,800 ft) horizontally and 2,000 m (6,600 ft) vertically. It was used in the ZPU series of anti-aircraft guns. Its size and power also made it a useful light anti-armour weapon on the BTR series of vehicles and the BRDM-2 scout car.

KPVT Heavy Machine Gun

KPVT heavy machine gun - 14.5x114mm
KPVT heavy machine gun with carry handle - 14.5x114mm

The KPVT version was developed for installation in vehicles (GRAU index - 56-P-562T). Compared to the KPV machine gun, the tank version has design features resulting from the specificity of its use in armored vehicles. Unlocking and locking is done by turning the bolt. For remote fire control, the machine gun is equipped with an electric trigger, powered by a battery and has a shot impulse counter; for remote control of loading and reloading, a pneumatic loading mechanism operating from a compressed air cylinder is used; by bouncing the spent cartridges forward and discharging them outside the tank turret, the sleeve outlet is used. In order to increase the stiffness of the case and the possibility of replacing the barrel without twisting the piston, the diameter of the case was increased. The machine gun does not have open sights, it is aimed using an optical sight. Mounted in the turrets of the T-10M tank, BRDM-2 armored reconnaissance vehicle and BTR-60, BTR-70, BTR-80, SKOT and OT-90 transporters. It was also included in the armament of the SU-122-54 armored gun.
