The Fowler is the designation for smooth-bore flintlock long guns primarily intended for hunting birds, hence the name. Being a civilian hunting weapon, they differ from flintlock muskets due smaller caliber and more refined design. Subsequently, they were replaced by percussion shotguns (although these are sometimes called "percussion fowlers", this term is not correct, since by that time period it had already been replaced by a "shotgun").
