The rifle of the film's title is a custom engraved Winchester Model 1873 which is mentioned as a very rare rifle that is so perfect that it's named "One of a Thousand". In the film, the town of Dodge City in celebration of the country's Centennial, puts on a shooting contest to win the prized rifle.
