The Suffering is a third-person shooter survival horror video game developed by Surreal Software in 2004. It was released for the Xbox, PlayStation 2 and PC. It's worth mentioning that the legendary Stan Winston designed the creatures for the game.

The game tells the story of Torque, a prisoner on death row for murdering his ex-wife and two children, a crime of which he claims to be innocent, saying he blacked out and cannot remember what happened. Shortly after he arrives in Abbot State Penitentiary on Carnate Island, off the coast of Maryland, an earthquake hits the island, resulting in the prison being attacked by unusual supernatural threats. So Torque needs to attempt to fight his way to freedom, whilst also going up against the demons within him, and attempting to remember what really happened to his family. The game features three endings, depending on the players' actions throughout, each of which reveal a different version of the murder of Torque's family.

The Suffering received primarily positive reviews.

The following firearms appear in the game The Suffering:

Taurus Model 689 style revolver

Known in the game simply as "Revolver", this firearm is the sidearm of the C.O.'s of Carnate Island. Can be dual-wielded.

M1921 Thompson

The Thompson submachine gun can be found all over Carnate Island. It is the only automatic weapon Torque can obtain. Has decent damage and rate of fire.

Sawed off Mossberg 500

One of the weapons located throughout the island is a sawed off Mossberg 500. Why correctional officers would have sawed off shotguns however is another thing.

C.O. committed suicide with the shotgun.

M1 Garand

The "Marksmen" creatures have M1 Garands fused into their bodies.

M1 Garand - .30-06
Despite being called "Marksmen" they are actually really bad shots.

Browning M2HB

The Prison Warden Hargrave uses a Browning M2HB to execute two inmates and to try and kill Torque and Dallas. This is the best weapon in the game, too bad it's unmovable.

Flashbang

Flashbangs are found throughout the prison.
