Other Weapons

Andy's Labrys

Andy identifies herself as "Andromache the Scythian," referencing an empire from the 8th century BCE. The edged weapon she wields is a modernized version of the Labrys, a double-headed battle axe associated with the Minoan civilization and mythical immortal characters such as Zeus.

Swords

Nicky and Joe both died during the Crusades; Nicky as a Crusader, and Joe as a Saracen. In a nod to this history, Joe carries a cruciform-hilted, double-edged, single-handed sword that looks similar to those used by Christian knights during the High Middle Ages throughout Europe. Joe wields a fantasy version of a scimitar, a curved backsword that was popular with Middle-Eastern warriors during the Middle Ages. It's worth noting that "Scimitar" is an anglicized version of the Italian word "scimitarra," and refers generically to curved swords. Different cultures throughout Asia and the ancient Middle and Near East used different forms of these swords, for which they had their own names. The sword that Joe uses (more clearly visible in the film poster) looks more like the type that is used primarily for modern belly-dancing performances than an actual medieval relic.

Title

Shouldn't the title of this page, for the purpose of wiki indexing, be "Old Guard, The"? --PyramidHead (talk) 14:08, 29 July 2020 (EDT)

Yes, it should. I'll take care of it. Spartan198 (talk) 19:04, 29 July 2020 (EDT)

I'm also pretty sure we don't include halberds, scimitars, or arming swords. While they may be prominent in the movie, they aren't culturally significant like, say, Rambo's knife. Spartan198 (talk) 19:09, 29 July 2020 (EDT)

Sorry for the confusion ... This is my first time creating a page for IMFDB, so I'm learning the ropes. I wasn't sure what happened to the edged weapons info, so I put it back in. I was specifically thinking of Rambo's knife as a precedent for including those items, but I understand if that's not IMFDB protocol. ZionAmmo (talk) 08:28, 30 July 2020 (EDT)ZionAmmo
I completely understand, no harm done. Rambo's knife is just a different case than this as the survival knife craze of the 80s that led to similar knives being made for and prominently featured in movies began with First Blood. If you still want to document the historical weapons, it's fine to do so, just put them in the section at the top of the discussion page here. Spartan198 (talk) 10:36, 30 July 2020 (EDT)
I'm not sure how to move those sections to Discussion ... No issue with doing it, just don't know what buttons to push. Please advise. ZionAmmo (talk)
I went ahead and did it. But it's pretty simple to do. Just open up the edit window, highlight and copy the code, then open up the edit window in the section at the top of the page and paste the code, then save the edit. Pretty straightforward. Spartan198 (talk) 15:33, 30 July 2020 (EDT)
Copy and paste! LOL ... I'm not used to things being that simple. Thanks! ZionAmmo (talk) 16:14, 30 July 2020 (EDT)

The grenade launcher and pistol

Looks like an FN EGLM. The unidentified pistol Charlize uses looks like a P22x series, but is a prop like you mentioned. --PyramidHead (talk) 21:39, 29 July 2020 (EDT)

Thanks! I'll add that info. ZionAmmo (talk) 08:29, 30 July 2020 (EDT)

M27

The HK416 in the first two screenshots is a regular 10" D10RS, while the third screenshot just has a couple of M4s with no M27 in sight. Spartan198 (talk) 10:36, 30 July 2020 (EDT)

Thanks for the correction! ZionAmmo (talk) 14:48, 30 July 2020 (EDT)

Question about Andy

Does she specifically refer to an empire? Because I'm pretty sure the Scythians were never a proper empire like, say, the Huns or Mongols. Spartan198 (talk) 18:10, 30 July 2020 (EDT)

Guns I've seen so far

One of the Marines has what looks like an M16A4, but it's too blurry to ID. It can be seen right at the beginning of the Afghanistan sequence. Best view is through the passenger door window of the Humvee, the Marine is hunched down with some kids in front of a house. The technical guarding Andy's plane in Afghanistan has a mounted M2HB machine gun. It's shown right as Andy and Nila are boarding. I'll note any more I see periodically.
