I would normally be more inclined to go down the route of the original weapons categories as that is more clearly defined, however Star Wars in particular has the habit of building off of one class of weapon to create an entirely different one. By that I mean they chop rifles down into pistols, or build up pistols into rifles. If the intent of the page is to identify guns for people who do not know, I feel that categorising based on the original gun would be confusing as you would be looking in the wrong category. For example there are rifles in TFA that are based on Bergmann pistols that have been fitted with an East German AK folding stock, a Mossberg pump, a scope and a big square barrel.
