A Type 73 Armored Personnel Carrier with a Type 74 on the hull. (Ep.1)

The hull-mounted machine gun looks more like Browning M1919A4, judging by the perforated barrel shroud. Also all sources claim that Type 73 had hull-mounted M1919. Greg-Z (talk) 04:30, 5 July 2015 (EDT)

The Japanese wiki page states the Type 73 APC had M1919A4 during the initial production. They were later replaced with Type 74s in the 80s since they used 7.62x51mm NATO rounds. The ones in the episode does looks like M1919 though...--Wildcards (talk) 04:53, 5 July 2015 (EDT)

I have been reading the manga of this anime, and it seems like they deliberately sent older equipment thru the gate. Type 64 rifles, Type 74 tanks, F4 phantoms with a mix of newer Helos, wheeled vehicles and light armor.--Insertjjs (talk) 11:12, 5 July 2015 (EDT)

They do deliberately deploy older vehicles to the Special Region, that way, if they can't maintain the Gate and have to evacuate back to Japan quickly, they could just ditch their equipment (since they are obsolete anyways) and just pull the personnel back. As for the Type 64 rifles, another reason it was selected was because the 7.62mm NATO rounds packs a bigger punch against armor wearing Imperial soldiers as well as other thick-skinned ogres and other beasts compare to the Type 89.--Wildcards (talk) 18:59, 5 July 2015 (EDT)

I don't remember them saying anything about the use of 7.62mm rounds being beneficiary against armored opponents, but its clear that the Type 64 was used due to its surplus as when one of the character breaks one later, she just remarks that its disposable.Inceptor57 (talk) 19:07, 5 July 2015 (EDT)

It wasn't mentioned in the manga, but I think it was briefly mentioned in the novel. In any case, most of the equipment dispatched to the Special Region are suppose to be disposable should they need to make a quick getaway.--Wildcards (talk) 13:06, 6 July 2015 (EDT)

Tone

Just to add, I've been reading the manga of this series for a while now and was excited to see it become an anime...until I actually saw the anime and damn did they PG the fuck out of a LOT of scenes. In the manga and I assume in the novel, many scenes are more bloody, brutal and savage. The initial attack on Ginza had literal mountains of bodies with the empire's flag on it along with them declaring victory before advancing deeper into the city. The first introduction of Rory was after a brutal rape of an entire family and we see the actual attack of the flame dragon on the elf village. The battle at on the other side of the gate was shown to be much more horrific as the manga depicted what happens when people get hit by modern artillery. I'm a bit disappointed the anime didn't show the R ratedness of the series Excalibur01 (talk) 00:14, 18 July 2015 (EDT)

I'm not surprised if the production team decided to do so like the anti-west thing the manga/novel has since the author has served with the JGSDF and is a admitted right-wing supporter. You can still see the family that the bandit killed laying next to them as they discuss about raiding the refugees. It is true though that they really tone down the violence and the gore, probably trying to attract more audiences. But we don't see enough of it to prove a point. In that same scene Rory introduced herself, she left one survivor of the bandits to dig graves for the dead family and then dig his own grave with his bare hands before killing him. Also sarcastically suggesting he should go rape the dead bodies since he claimed he didn't do it, right before killing him and literally getting off on killing people. I'm going to go nuts if the production team thinks its okay to have nude females around (Tuka in Ep.3, and I'm looking at you Onsen scene from Chapter 21), yet completely censor gore and rape from everything else. Why not just flat out make it a rated R anime like Berserk or Tokyo Ghoul. I understand genre blending like this isn't an everyday thing, but they should've stick more to its source.
