He only gets the name 'Jack' from the papers and documents left over from the previous owner of the Paper Street home (seen in the scene where he quotes from one of the booklets, saying 'I am Julia's nipple' as well as 'I am Jack's Medulla oblongata' etc while Tyler plays around on a bike.) The filmmakers asked Chuck Palahniuk to give a name to the protagonist for the sake of the script, and so he gave him the name of 'Narrator'.
