Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet (February 23, 2018)

Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet is the fifth entry in Sword Art Online's alternate timeline video game universe, often dubbed the "Gameverse". As with the novel/anime timeline, much of Sword Art Online does not feature firearms, and so the previous four games, Hollow Fragment (set in Sword Art Online), Lost Song (set in ALfheim Online), Hollow Realization (set in Sword Art: Origin), and Millennium Twilight (set in ALO again), do not feature their own pages on this site.

The Gameverse timeline is a parallel timeline to the original timeline, diverging during the climactic duel at the end of the Aincrad story arc. Hollow Fragment opens with this duel, but it is interrupted by a major glitch in the system, which leaves the showdown unresolved and forces the players trapped in Sword Art Online (the game) to finish clearing all 100 floors of the great floating castle, Aincrad. This single event reshapes everything that comes after it, splitting the two timelines. Much like the alternate timeline Star Trek movies, the new timeline retains many of the elements of the original, as many things would simply be unaffected by people being trapped in SAO a few more months, and many of the same subsequent events happen, though they often take place in a different manner. One notable relevant example to Fatal Bullet is Shino Asada (Username: Sinon) and her dark past, which, in the original timeline was dealt with alongside the Death Gun incident in the Phantom Bullet story arc, while in the gameverse her past has already been handled in Hollow Realization.

Unlike the previous games, in Fatal Bullet the player takes control of a customizable protagonist, with the established SAO cast as well as new characters supporting the story. It is worth noting that the protagonist has a well-established standard appearance and weapon selection, but the player is allowed to change it as they prefer; the protagonist does not, however, have a default/established name, and as such one can't be used on this page. The protagonist's newly acquired AI companion, an ArFA-sys Type-X with the designation A290-00 and nicknamed Rei (meaning "zero"), is central to the protagonist's story and journey though the world of GGO. The protagonist's childhood friend with the username Kureha is the protagonist's main friend in the game, and introduced them to GGO. A mysterious solo player who goes by Zeliska, and the leader of a top Squadron with the username Itsuki also play central roles. The Death Gun incident also occurs in some capacity in the story as well, and is primarily the focus of "Kirito Mode", a side-story played from Kirito's perspective as he works to take down Death Gun, much like the original Phantom Bullet arc.

As with the Phantom Bullet story arc in the original timeline, Fatal Bullet takes place in the VRMMORPG of Gun Gale Online. It should be noted, however, that Fatal Bullet (the real world video game) takes liberties with its depiction of firearm models, often appearing a bit stylized and slightly futuristic, without real names, something that the "real", in-universe Gun Gale Online does not do (as seen in Sword Art Online II). Generally one would say that a video game that gets firearms wrong or stylizes them is getting reality wrong, but in this case it's actually a real world game getting a fictional game wrong, because Fatal Bullet is a game representing another game. That said, the weapons aren't drastically stylized, and are always instantly recognizable.

Warning: Some descriptions and images are potential spoilers for the series, read at your own risk.

The following weapons appear in the video game Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet:

Pistols

Once the appropriate skill has been obtained, handguns can be dual-wielded, although doubles their stat requirement.

FN Five-seveN

As with his original timeline self, Kazuto Kirigaya (Username: Kirito) wields an FN Five-seveN akimbo with his Kagemitsu G4 photon sword; in Fatal Bullet it goes by the name "SPB Night Sky". The weapon is also used by Premiere, a self-aware AI that joined Kirito from Sword Art: Origin, who wields two of them at the same time. The weapon lacks damage, but is very stable, has a large 20-round magazine, and has a very low stat requirement to use.

Dual-wielding with his Kagemitsu G4, Kirito holds his Five-seveN in his left hand.
Kirito covers his eyes with his left hand, gripping his pistol.

Browning Hi-Power / Beretta 93R

A cross between the Browning Hi-Power and Beretta 93R appears as the "HGBST3 Kusanagi", a handgun that fires in 3-round bursts (hence the "BST3" part of its designation). The weapon is used by Yuuki Konno the to her sidearm Muramasa F9 photon sword, while a pair of them are dual wielded by the canon form of the protagonist. The weapon burns through ammo quickly due to being set on burst by default (with a 21-round magazine, that's 7 shots at most), but has powerful burst damage and is fairly accurate.

Browning Hi-Power - 9x19mm
Beretta 93R - 9x19mm

Glock 18C

The Glock 18C returns as Sinon's sidearm, named "Lightning" and fitted with its extended magazine, correctly holding 34 rounds (counting one in the chamber). It is also used by Alternative Gun Gale Online main character Miyu Shinohara (Username: Fukaziroh) as her sidearm, standing in for the S&W M&P9 that she uses in the novels; Fuka and the other three AGGO main characters make what are effectively cameo appearances in Fatal Bullet. Its description notes the compensator cut on the top of the slide. The weapon functions similarly to the MP5K, but benefits from handgun-type skills.

Norinco Type 54

As in the original timeline, the player calling himself "Death Gun" uses a Norinco Type 54 "Black Star" to supposedly murder players in Gun Gale Online, just as he did in the main timeline's Phantom Bullet arc. It appears as the "Prosti", correctly holding 9 rounds (again, counting the one in the chamber). It is also used by Bazalt Joe (real name unknown) as his sidearm. Although it's unrealistically given higher damage than most pistols to offset its small magazine, it still used normal "Handgun Bullets", unlike the actually-larger-caliber Glock 37, which is unique in using "Large Handgun Bullets". Its performance is overall balanced, combining power, RoF and handling, but hampered by it's small magazine size.

Norinco Type 54 - 7.62x25mm Tokarev

Glock 37

The Glock 37, denoted by the combination of its use of large-caliber rounds and 11-round (10+1) capacity, appears as the "Long Stroke", and is fitted with a compensator. It's shown to be the weapon of choice for A290-00 (Nickname: Rei), the protagonist's Type-X model of ArFA-sys unit; Rei is never seen in official artwork with another weapon, making their canon secondary weapon of choice unknown. The G37 is also used by Argo (real name unknown), the whisker-clad information broker, as her primary weapon, while Itsuki (real name unknown) and Alternative Gun Gale Online main character Goushi Asougi (Username: M) use one as their sidearms, and in the latter's case, standing in for his Heckler & Koch HK45 pistol that he uses in the original work. It appears as a large-type handgun, and is currently the most powerful handgun in the game in terms of single-shot damage, although has somewhat high recoil.

Glock 37 - .45 GAP

Submachine Guns

Much like handguns, SMGs can also be dual-wielded, at the cost of doubling their stat requirement.

Heckler & Koch MP5K

The H&K MP5K, lacking its foregrip (making it resemble the civilian SP89), appears as the "Sturm KZ", holding a rather optimistic 40 rounds in its 15-round magazine. Characters hold the weapon with both hands around the pistol grip like a pistol, making the lack of a foregrip a non-issue. It is the primary weapon of Keiko Ayano (Username: Silica), a fitting choice for someone accustomed to using daggers.

Heckler & Koch MP5K - 9x19mm
Heckler & Koch SP89 - 9x19mm
With a promo image all to herself, Silica shows off her MP5K; being a dagger-user in other games, machine pistols are an excellent fit for this little beast tamer. Her beloved companion, Pina the feathered dragon, only appears in town as a pet, rather than assisting in combat as she did in other games.
The newly awakened ArFA-sys holds an MP5K, while the protagonist fires his FAMAS.

IMI Uzi

The Uzi appears under the odd name "Draque L Sirocco", and holds exactly double the ammo of its real counterpart, at 64 rounds. It is the weapon of choice for Kureha (real name unknown), the protagonist's driven and energetic childhood friend. The weapon has the slowest RoF of all SMGs, but is accurate and packs decent damage.

FN P90

The FN P90 appears as the "SPB Potassium", correctly holding 50 rounds. A hot pink P90 is the signature weapon of Karen Kohiruimaki (Username: LLENN) in the spin-off novel series Sword Art Online: Alternative Gun Gale Online, which will be getting an anime adaptation not long after Fatal Bullet releases.

The weapon has a cross between high RoF, decent accuracy and RoF, but below-average power.

Izhmash PP-19 Bizon-2

The PP-19 Bizon-2 appears with a permanently attached PBS-1 suppressor, and has the fitting name of "Spiral Shadow"; its helical magazine correctly holds 64 rounds. The suppressor has the gameplay effect of reducing Hate (aggro) from enemies gained by the player. A pair of them are dual-wielded by Nijika Karatachi (Username: Rain).

Shotguns

Like most other weapons, shotguns can also be dual-wielded, at the cost of double their stat requirement. Somehow, this also bypasses a pump-action shotgun's needs to be pumped per shot.

Remington Model 870 Wingmaster

The Remington 870 Wingmaster appears as the "Impact Wind", and holds double its real world tube capacity, with 8 shells. Alternative Gun Gale Online main character Elsa Kanzaki (Username: Pitohui) uses one as her secondary weapon, standing in for a pistol-gripped shorty 870 that she uses in the novels.

In terms of pure power, the weapon has the highest single-shot damage for all shotguns.

The protagonist pumps an 870 after permanently deactivating an Automaton.

Benelli M3 Kromo

The Benelli M3 Kromo, named "Valkyrie", is featured with its correct capacity of 7 shells and is always used in semi-auto mode. It is the weapon of choice of Rika Shinozaki (Username: Lisbeth), a blacksmith in other games and now a gunsmith in GGO.

The weapon fires in semi-auto mode, but is still pumped after reloading. The weapon has lower damage than the M870, but is compensated by firing roughly twice as fast.

Benelli M3 Kromo - 12 gauge
On the far left, Lisbeth stands with her M3 slung over her shoulder. Aincrad's top blacksmith will undoubtedly do just as well as a gunsmith.

UTAS UTS-15

The UTAS UTS-15 appears as the "Honeycomb 87", correctly carrying 15 shells. It's used by Argo as her secondary weapon of choice. Its description makes note of its dual magazine tubes and cutouts to see remaining ammo.

The gun has the lowest damage among shotguns, but is compensated by it's high 15-round magazine.

UTAS UTS-15 - 12 gauge

Daewoo USAS-12 CQ

The USAS-12, fitted with its 20-round drum magazine, is slated to be added with the game's third DLC, used by Alicization (upcoming season 3) heroine Alice, a resident of the realm of Underworld.

Assault & Battle Rifles

Howa Type 64

The Howa Type 64, always fitted with a bayonet, appears as the "Midou-Type AR", holding a rather excessive 50 rounds in its 20-round magazine. A silver-plated version and gold-plated version exist as a pre-order bonus items. It is the primary weapon of Ryoutarou Tsuboi (Username: Klein), which is entirely unsurprising given his preference for Samurai-style outfits and weapons in other games.

The weapon totes overall balanced stats with a simple stat requirement to use.

AKM

A fairly standard AK-pattern rifle fitted with modern polymer magazines appears, very fittingly, as the "Robust"; it holds 40 rounds instead of the correct 30. It serves as Pitohui's main weapon, though in-universe she's an avid weapon collector, usually using a different gun every time she goes into the field.

The weapon has the slowest firing rate for the assault-rifle tree and lacks accuracy, but has a lower stat requirements than the Type 64 and high damage.

FAMAS G2

The FAMAS G2, fitted with a bayonet, appears as the "Sylph Type-A"; it holds double its real capacity, with 60 rounds. It is the signature weapon of Suguha Kirigaya (Username: Leafa), even being named after the race she plays as in ALO; Leafa uses a Kagemitsu G4 photon sword as her secondary weapon. The FAMAS is also the canon primary weapon of the protagonist.

The weapon has the highest RoF in general, short of gattling-gun type weapons, but middling stats in other regards.

AR57 AR-57

An AR-57, manufactured by AR57 (yes, you read that right) appears as the "SPB Rapier". It is the signature weapon of Asuna Yuuki (Username: Asuna), and named for her weapon class of choice in other games, the reason for which is because she and Kirito can share the same ammo if needed. Due to its standard size M4-platform design, the AR-57 is classed in-game as an assault rifle (a very broad category in-game that covers nearly all shoulder-fired automatics), though due to its use of the 5.7mm round it's more technically a... very large PDW. Its description does note that it's a conversion of an assault rifle platform, as well as that the shells eject out the (former) magazine well, due to the top-mounted magazines. The game's second DLC will add AGGO characters Clarence and Shirley, with the former using an AR-57 as her primary just as she does in the novels. Of note is that the model for the Mk3 variant of this weapon is missing its magazine.

Asuna holds her AR-57 on Kureha, who is holding her Uzi on Kirito, who himself just tried to attack the protagonist, who in turn was protecting ArFA-sys, whom the protagonist had just awoken. Now would be an excellent time for everyone to calm down a little.

SIG SG 550

The SIG SG 550 appears in the game, named "Jungfrau", appropriately named for a well-known mountain in the Swiss Alps; it somehow fits a whopping 60 rounds into its 20-round magazine. Its description notes that it was designed with mountain warfare in mind, and as such it boasts the best long range performance of any AR in the game.

The Automaton on the left can be seen holding a SG 550. The rifle's general profile, green furniture, transparent magazine, and integral bipod are all visible.

Steyr AUG A1

Coming with the game's third DLC, the Steyr AUG appears as Eugeo's weapon of choice. His use of this weapon is a deliberate nod to the rifle's use in the Alicization arc, though used by other characters.

Machine Guns

Despite different weapon types, machine guns in the game are still categorized as "assault rifles", meaning you can dual-wield two +10KG machine gun, if you choose to do so.

M249

The M249 appears as the "LMG Nuage", correctly using a 200-round belt; it can be distinguished from an original Minimi by its rear sight. The very charismatic yet macho Bazalt Joe dual wields an pair of M249s as his primary weapons.

PKM

The PKM is featured as the "MG Karymsky", and correctly uses 100-round belts. The friendly solo player named Zeliska (real name unknown), nicknamed the Uncrowned Queen due to her never entering tournaments or joining squadrons, uses one as her secondary weapon;

IMI Negev / M249 hybrid

In an odd example of what seems more like a live action armourer modifying an M249 to stand in for an IMI Negev, that weapon appears as the "LMG Ulan Buh". The core of the weapon reuses the "LMG Nuage" model, however many parts have been modified or replaced to resemble a Negev. The replaced Negev parts include the flash hider, bipod, 45-degree angle foregrip, handguard, carry handle, folding stock hinge, stock cutouts, ammo box (which correctly holds 150 rounds), and Meprolight red dot sight of the Negev. Additionally, while the "LMG Nuage" is correctly modeled with an open bolt, the "LMG Ulan Buh" is not; the (illegible) markings on the reciever also differ between the two weapons.

IMI Negev - 5.56x45mm

Sniper Rifles

MAS FR F2

The MAS FR F2 appears as the "Sangfroid", correctly holding 10 rounds. Sinon starts the game using this weapon, but will later switch to the Hécate II after a while, just as she did in the original timeline. Its description notes its thermal sleeve over the barrel.

MAS FR F2 - 7.62x51mm
Kirito deals with an Automaton who is armed with an FR F2.

VSS Vintorez

The VSS Vintorez appears, rather appropriately, as the "Quiet". It is fitted with its standard PSO-1 scope, but also the 20-round magazines usually used on the AS Val, and thus correctly holds 20 rounds. As with the PP-19 Bizon, its suppressor reduces Hate/aggro from enemies. It is the weapon of choice for Kotone Takemiya (Username: Philia).

Despite originally being intended as a compact sniper rifle, the "Quiet" is abnormally large, coming close to the size of a traditional, full-length assault rifle.

SVD

The SVD appears as the "Dragonfall", holding the proper 10 rounds. It is the primary weapon of high-level player Itsuki, leader of the Alphard squadron.

Mk 14. Mod 0

The Mk 14. Mod 0 EBR appears as the "MEBR Custom", correctly loaded with 20-round magazines. It is M's signature weapon. Literally. In Alternative Gun Gale Online he actually has his signature engraved on the gun.

PGM Hécate II

The PGM Hécate II appears as the "AMR Tiamat", correctly using 7-round magazines. After completing a quest (or after some duration), Sinon will upgrade to it after using the FR F2. Its fictional name carries over the original's goddess reference; Hecate was a Greek goddess of the Underworld, while Tiamat was the Babylonian goddess of creation.

Accuracy International Arctic Warfare Magnum

As with the main timeline, "Death Gun" uses a suppressed Accuracy International Arctic Warfare Magnum; it's named "AMR Assassin" and correctly holds five rounds. "Death Gun" uses this rifle to engage players that he's not trying to kill in a real world murder sense; it's only his Type 54 that's treated as having this ability.

Accuracy International AWM - .338 Lapua

Blaser R93 LRS2

The game's second DLC will be adding AGGO characters Clarence and Shirley, with the latter wielding her Blaser R93 LRS2 from the novels. Shirley uses this rifle as it's the closest thing in GGO to her favourite hunting rifle, the civilian/sporting version.

Handheld Gatling Guns

General Dynamics M197 Vulcan

A miniaturized, handheld version of the M197 Vulcan (seemingly in 7.62mm like the M134) appears as the "Big Bear". It's the primary weapon of Andrew Gilbert Mills (Username: Agil), who's large stature is well-suited to such a beast of a weapon.

General Dynamics M197 Vulcan - 20x102mm

General Electric M134 Minigun

A handheld M134 appears as the "Goliath". As with all gatling types in the game, it has an overheat mechanic but no need to reload.

The protagonist fires a Minigun at a large knight-type boss.

Launchers

Saab Bofors Dynamics AT4

The Saab Bofors Dynamics AT4, fitted with the grip assembly of the Panzerfaust 3, appears as the "Bunker Comet". It is used by Strea-MHCP002, "younger" sister to Yui-MHCP001, as her primary weapon, while she carries an Optical gatling gun called Benetnasch as her secondary. As a user of greatswords in other games, these large, heavy weapons suit Strea very well.

Saab Bofors Dynamics AT4 - 84mm
A custom protagonist fires her AT4 at a boss.

Panzerfaust 3

The Panzerfaust 3 also makes a proper appearance as well, called "Blast Spear". It's used by Klein as his secondary weapon. It seems likely the developers borrowed its grip assembly for the AT4 simply so it could share animations with the other launchers, as the Deneb Kaitos Optical launcher reuses it as well.

Panzerfaust 3 - 60mm

Milkor MGL Mk 1L

The MGL Mk 1L appears as the "GL6", and comes in variants which fire various different grenade types, such as HE or incendiary. The incendiary version is Agil's secondary weapon, and as if his gatling gun / grenade launcher pairing wasn't overkill enough, Fukaziroh, using the HE version, dual wields a pair.

Milkor MGL Mk 1L fitted with Armson OEG reflex sight - 40x46mm

Explosives

Plasma Grenade

GGO's plasma grenade makes a return. Two are notably seen on Zeliska's belt.

On her belt, Zeliska has two plasma grenades, what can be assumed to be one smoke grenade, and a bandoleer of shotgun shells.

Optical Weapons

In addition to real world ballistic firearms, GGO also features Optical Guns, which, as the name implies, fire light-based projectiles; they fit into the same family as blasters or laser guns from other sci-fi settings. In GGO, Optical Guns are better suited to hunting monsters, whereas cartridge-based (real world) guns are better against other players. Only one model of Optical Gun exists per weapon category (apart from Pistols, which have two), and for inclusion as well as to avoid confusion, they're listed here for reference.

Peacock

The Peacock is the Optical Shotgun, able to fire 20 shots before reloading, and boasts excellent accuracy. Zeliska uses one as her primary weapon, which makes her the only character to use an Optical Gun as their primary.

Zeliska takes aim after confronting Dyne.
