Sudden Impact is the fourth installment in the Dirty Harry film franchise and the only Dirty Harry film to be directed by Clint Eastwood himself. Eastwood returns as Inspector "Dirty Harry" Callahan, who visits a small Northern California city while on leave from the department and finds himself encountering a woman (Sondra Locke) with a vendetta against some of the town's citizens. The 1983 sequel also is the Dirty Harry film where Eastwood utters the immortal line "Go ahead, make my day", while holding his Smith & Wesson Model 29. Sudden Impact also made popular the use of the .44 Magnum AMP Auto Mag Model 180.

Revolvers
Smith & Wesson Model 29
Inspector "Dirty Harry" Callahan (Clint Eastwood) carries his Smith & Wesson Model 29 .44 Magnum as his sidearm in the film. He is first seen pulling it in the coffee shop and saying what is one of the most famous movie lines in history. The S&W is used until it is kicked off a pier by Mick (Paul Drake). He then uses his AMP Auto Mag Pistol as a replacement.
Insp. "Dirty Harry" Callahan (Clint Eastwood) holds his Smith & Wesson Model 29 on a robber in the diner as he holds a woman hostage.
Colt Detective Special
Jennifer Spencer (Sondra Locke) uses a nickel plated 3rd Generation Colt Detective Special as her weapon of choice to get revenge on the people that raped her and her sister long ago. Later in the film we see Mick (Paul Drake) use her gun to kill San Paulo Police Chief Jannings (Pat Hingle).
Mick finishes off Chief Jannings (Pat Hingle) with Jennifer's Colt Detective Special.
Mick (Paul Drake) considers killing him a "freebie".
Smith & Wesson Model 10
A Smith & Wesson Model 10 is used by the leader of the robbers during the diner robbery, who is soon killed by Callahan.

One of the robbers during the diner robbery is seen briefly using a Smith & Wesson Model 19 revolver.
Smith & Wesson Model 36
Police Chief Jannings (Pat Hingle) uses a Smith & Wesson Model 36 when Jennifer Spencer (Sondra Locke) enters his house but is soon forced to drop it when Mick (Paul Drake) arrives and forces him to drop it, threatening to kill his son if he didn't.
Colt Trooper
San Paulo patrolman, Officer Bennett (Mark Keyloun) tries to fire his Colt Trooper at the bank robber but is injured before he can fire off a shot. Later, one of Mick's (Paul Drake) thugs is seen shot in the head by Insp. Callahan (Clint Eastwood) while holding a Colt Trooper belonging to Horace King (Albert Popwell), taken from his holster.
Pistols
AMP Auto Mag Model 180
After being attacked by a group of mob assassins, Insp. Callahan (Clint Eastwood) is inspired to take out his old pistol, an AMC Auto Mag Model 180 chambered in .44 AMP with an 8.5" barrel. When his Smith & Wesson Model 29 is kicked off of a dock by Mick (Paul Drake), he replaces it with his Auto Mag for the remainder of the film. Much like the S&W Model 29 in the first film, the production crew had a very difficult time acquiring this gun, to the point where they had to contact the original designer, Harry Sanford, who had enough parts in his basement to build two guns for the film. These guns were custom made with serial numbers "CLINT-1" and "CLINT-2". The "CLINT-1" gun was left in live firing mode so Eastwood could train with it to accurately depict recoil while "CLINT-2" was converted to fire blanks for the film. It is rumored that the "CLINT-2" gun was extremely unreliable cycling blank cartridges during production, to the great consternation of Mr. Eastwood. Post-production, it was used for an episode of T.J. Hooker, where it also experienced cycling issues. It currently resides in a private collection. "CLINT-1" was retained by Mr. Eastwood.
Callahan takes his AMP Auto Mag Model 180 out of its case. Note how the magazines are loaded with six rounds instead of the full seven. This may be because he doesn't want to wear out the springs on the magazines, so he doesn't store them fully loaded, and possibly also because he has become accustomed to a six-round load (from use of his revolver). In addition, it could be a reference to the famous 'Six shots or only five' line from the first movie.
Never sneak up on a man with a loaded gun, especially if he's Clint Eastwood.
"Well, this is the .44 Magnum Auto Mag, and it holds a 300 grain cartridge - And if properly used, it can remove the fingerprints."
It's not entirely clear what 'proper' technique could result in a suspect losing all of his fingers and both his thumbs, particularly considering the weapon only holds a maximum of 7 rounds (as its design does not allow +1 in the chamber), but no doubt Clint would find a way...

Callahan dispatches Mick's men with his AMC Auto Mag Pistol. Note the considerable, bright muzzle flash from the barrel as he fires it.
Browning Hi-Power
Two of the mob assassins attempting to kill Insp. Callahan (Clint Eastwood) use Browning Hi-Power pistols. Further on in the film, another mob assassin tries to kill Callahan in his apartment in San Paulo, also with a Browning Hi-Power (This one fitted with a suppressor), but trips on Callahan's dog Meathead, giving him time to draw his Smith & Wesson Model 29 and kill him. Later, Mick (Paul Drake) tries to grab his own Hi-Power to shoot Callahan when he walks into his house unannounced.
Another assassin (Nick Dimitri) runs from Callahan armed with a Hi-Power.
Colt 1903 Pocket Hammerless
One of the robbers during the diner robbery uses a Colt 1903 Pocket Hammerless. Tyrone (Wendall Wellman), one of Jennifer Spencer's (Sondra Locke) victims, also has this pistol.
Star Model B
A Star Model B is used by the bank robber that Insp. Callahan (Clint Eastwood) chases when he arrives in San Paulo. Another Star Model B is later seen in the hands of George (Michael Maurer), one of Mick's (Paul Drake) men.
Trivia: The chase scene in the film True Lies between Harry Tasker (Arnold Schwarzenegger) and Salim Abu Azziz (Art Malik) heavily resembles the chase scene in this film and may have been inspired by it.
George holds his Star Model B on Horace King (Albert Popwell).
George is shocked when Mick kills Chief Jannings (Pat Hingle).
Beretta 948
Ray Parkins (Audrie J. Neenan) shows off her personal protection, a small pistol tucked in her waistband ("Mexican carry"-style) to Tyrone (Wendall Wellman) in his hardware store. It is difficult to identify, but it is clearly a Beretta based on the hammer shape. This gun was previously misidentified as a Beretta 92SB (because the earlier Beretta 92 variants had a heel magazine release and the Beretta 92F did not exist yet), but the grip shape is far too different for this to be the case. For instance, it appears much smaller than a full-size 92SB. It can also not be a compact 92SB-C because the grip only has one screw. It is probably a Beretta 948, which is a .22 version of the Beretta M1934. It is unlikely to be an M1934 or an M1935 because both of those have a lanyard loop on the left side of the grip, which is clearly not visible here. This feature is absent on the 948.
Shotguns
Smith & Wesson 3000 Shotgun
Horace King (Albert Popwell, in his fourth and final appearance in the Dirty Harry series) uses a Smith & Wesson 3000 Shotgun with a pistol grip and a side-folding stock when showing Insp. Callahan (Clint Eastwood) his marksmanship on paper targets. Later, Mick (Paul Drake) takes this shotgun from him after he stabs him and uses it for the rest of the film.
Horace King (Albert Popwell) removes his Smith & Wesson 3000 shotgun from its case. This was Popwell's fourth and final appearance in the Dirty Harry series, having portrayed three different characters in the previous films.
