Striptease (1995)

Striptease is a 1995 comedy-drama written and directed by Andrew Bergman. Based on the caper novel Strip Tease by Carl Hiaasen, the film stars Demi Moore as Erin Grant, a single mother working as an exotic dancer to pay for an expensive custody battle with her ex-husband (Robert Patrick). Grant's act also attracts the attention of a lecherous United States Congressman (Burt Reynolds).

Darrell Grant (Robert Patrick) steals a Smith & Wesson 5906 from his sister's trailer. Later, he pulls and attempts to fire it on Malcolm Moldowsky (Paul Guilfoyle), however nothing happens and he tosses it away in disgust.

Darrell Grant (Robert Patrick) stares in confusion at the pistol after he pulls the trigger and nothing happens, oblivious to the fact the safety is still engaged. Being both unfamiliar with firearms and stoned to the gills, Darrell has missed this rather important step, as well as several others such as chambering a round or even checking first that the magazine is loaded (in the book, the pistol fails to fire because the gun's owner has attached a trigger lock, which Darrell, in his stoned condition, failed to notice until that moment).
