The U.S Marine platoon providing security for USS Tigerfish during the mission are armed with M16 rifles. 1st Lieutenant Russell Walker (Tony Bill) and Captain Leslie Anders (Jim Brown) are both prominently shown handling the M16 at various points in the film, and some Navy sailors also hold M16s when they are engaged in a standoff with Soviet troops.

The original M16, the first version, firing in a 20-round magazine, adopted in large numbers by the U.S. Air Force in Vietnam. This has the original 3-prong flash hider. It would later be replaced by the upgraded M16A1 - 5.56x45mm
Marines hold their M16s as Captain Anders speaks to them.
Vaslov watches as a Marine reassembles his M16 with his eyes closed.
Anders watches as Soviet jets fly over Ice Station Zebra.
