Sgt. Stubby: An American Hero (2018)

Sgt. Stubby: An American Hero is a 2018 animated feature set during World War I centered on the real-life exploits of the titular Sergeant Stubby, the war's most highly decorated service animal. It features the voice talents of Logan Lerman, Helena Bonham Carter, and Gérard Depardieu.

Rifles

M1903A3 Springfield

U.S. doughboys are all seen armed with anachronistic M1903A3 Springfield rifles throughout the film, as opposed to the period-appropriate original M1903. Some French soldiers in the trenches of the Chemin des Dames are also seen carrying these rifles.

The dog later to be named Stubby is blocked from entering the Yale University camp by a pair of M1903A3 Springfield rifles, the first appearance of the rifles in the film.

Now a member of the pack, Stubby stands (or sits) at ease whilst surrounded by Springfields. It's rather obvious from the matching wood grain patterns that all of these rifles are the same 3D model asset.

Robert Conroy (Logan Lerman) chambers a round in his Springfield rifle. A nice detail in the film is that the rifles are actually depicted as bolt-action operated rifles, as opposed to many animated shows/movies ignoring the bolt and depicting such weapons as semi-automatic.

Lebel Model 1886

Most French troops in the film are seen carrying Lebel Model 1886 rifles throughout the movie, most notably by Gaston Baptiste (Gérard Depardieu).

French soldiers in the trenches of the Chemin des Dames are armed with Lebel 1886 rifles.

French soldiers with Lebels watch as mustard gas fills the air. While the foremost soldier practices some good trigger discipline, the soldier on the right appears to have mounted a bayonet, seemingly the only Lebel in the film to do so (and unfortunately mostly off-screen).

An amused Baptiste gets the drop on trench invading Germans with his Lebel 1886. Although the rifle does seem to be rendered a tad small in the movie, Baptiste himself happens to be an extremely large man as well, which makes the rifle look even smaller.

Mauser Gewehr 1898

German soldiers are all armed with Mauser Gewehr 1898 rifles.

A German soldier takes aim with his Mauser Gewehr 1898 rifle. For whatever reason, nearly all German soldiers are wearing gas masks, though this was likely done to avoid animating a third army of faces.

...and that appears to be a charge! The Germans mount bayonets on their rifles shortly before departing the trench. Strangely, once in battle, hardly any bayonets are seen at all.

Grenades

Model 17 Stielhandgranate

German and French soldiers are both seen using Model 17 Stielhandgranates. At one point in the film Stubby saves several soldiers by grabbing a thrown Model 17 in his mouth and running away with it, injuring himself in the process when the grenade explodes.

A worried Elmer Olson (Jordan beck) stares at a freshly landed Model 17 Stielhandgranate. Note the shelf on the grenade head and the shape of the cap on the bottom of the stick (although, if that's still in place, shouldn't the grenade be un-primed?). Luckily, Stubby whisks it away before it detonates. Luckily for Olson, that is. But Stubby lives too, albeit barely.

Rifle mounted smoke grenade

At one point in the film, a trio of Springfield rifles are seen launching smoke grenades.

Doughboys prepare to fire smoke grenades from their Springfield rifles to create a smokescreen. There's no launcher, rather the grenades seem to be inserted into the barrels.

A detailed closeup of the grenades, which bear a vague resemblance to the M11 rifle grenades from World War II. Although one could guess that just the tip is a grenade and the rest is the actual launcher, when the rifles fire the entire thing goes flying, leaving nothing but the regular rifle behind.

Other/Trivia

10.5 cm leFH 16

The Germans use what seem to be 10.5 cm leFH 16 field howitzers to propagate a mustard gas attack.

Germans load a howitzer with mustard gas bombs which have vaguely humorous skull and crossbones painted on them (that's how you know they're dangerous).

The howitzer fires its payload. Although the previous statement about the gas masks is likely also true, the constant gas attacks could be the other reason why all the Germans in this movie wear gas masks.

USS Minnesota

Various cannons and naval guns are seen on board the USS Minnesota including 8"/45 caliber guns, 7"/44 caliber guns and 8"/35 caliber gun (and a few others). The same loadout appears on a second ship at the end of the film as well, although this is likely the same 3D model asset as the USS Minnesota. It can be noted that the USS Minnesota is depicted as carrying American troops all the way to Europe, despite the fact that in reality it was damaged on the voyage and had to return back to the states where it was left to be repaired until the end of the war.

Renault FT

Renault FT tanks are seen near the end of the film, and aid Allied troops in a push against the German trenches. They are notably under the command of George S. Patton in the film. These tanks are equipped with Hotchkiss M1914 machine guns.

Canon de 120 mm L modèle 1878

A number of French Canon de 120 mm L modèle 1878s are seen along the docks of where the USS Minnesota is docked near early in the movie, with a few seen again when the return ship docks.

Stubby sneaks by some cannons early in the movie while trying to sneak aboard the USS Minnesota. In reality, it was Conroy himself who smuggled the dog aboard.
