About

SIG, standing for Schweizerische Industrie Gesellschaft (Swiss Industrial Company), is a Swiss group with a historically major involvement with firearm manufacture. The group was originally founded as Schweizerische Waggon Fabrik (Swiss Wagon Factory) in 1853 by Friedrich Peyer im Hof, Heinrich Moser, and Johann Conrad Neher. The company entered a rifle design competition for the Swiss Army around 1860s, which they won and are awarded with a contract for the production of their Prelaz-Burnand rifle. This prompted the company to shift its focus and begin its firearm manufacturing production, as well as renaming itself to SIG in 1860.

SIG would continue to expand its firearm manufacturing capabilities in the following decades, with many of its weapons adopted by the Swiss Army. They produced the Mondragón Rifle in early 1900s and developed the SIG P210 in 1937. The company purchased J. P. Sauer & Sohn and Hammerli in 1970, and entered a partnership with the German Sauer due to Swiss laws preventing firearm export, creating SIG Sauer GmbH from which they could expand into the global market. SIG also created SIGARM Inc. in the United States to import its weapons into USA.

SIG today no longer manufactures weapons, and are instead a major player in the food packaging industry. In 2000, to refocus its manufacturing on to food packaging, all of SIG's firearm manufacturing subsidiaries and subdivisions were sold to Michael Lüke and Thomas Ortmeier. SIG's own firearm division became Swiss Arms, and is now a part of the Lüke & Ortmeier Gruppe. Many of Swiss Arm's weapons are imported into USA by SIGARM Inc., now named SIG Sauer Inc.
