English "Queen Anne" breech-loading pistol with detachable barrel
Pocket size "Queen Anne" breech-loading pistol with detachable barrel

The Queen Anne (also known as a "turn-off barrel pistol") was an unusual English flintlock pistol in which the lock plate, breech and trigger were forged in one piece, in a similar way to a modern firearm action, so named because they became popular in the reign of Queen Anne (1707-1714), though the mechanism existed since the 1640s.

Most Queen Anne pistols are breech-loaders with turn-off barrels that can be unscrewed from the weapon to insert the ball and powder without ramming or wadding. While this provided a great advantage in increasing reloading speed, Queen Anne pistols were not popular with the military due to their expense and the possibility of dropping the detachable barrel while loading, and were mostly used by civilian shooters for self-defence. An unusually high number of examples were rifled, as the breech-loading nature bypasses the difficulty of loading pre-Minié ball muzzleloading rifles.

Note that any firing Queen Anne Flintlock Pistols in a live-action production are likely to be modern replicas since period flintlocks are unsafe to shoot and much more expensive.
