Operation Mekong (2016)

Operation Mekong (Chinese: 湄公河行动; pinyin: Méi gōng hé xíng dòng) is a 2016 Chinese/Hong Kong action thriller film directed by Dante Lam. The story is based on the Mekong River massacre in 2011, when two Chinese cargo ships were ambushed by local drug gangs, resulting in the death of 13 Chinese sailors.

In Operation Mekong, in the aftermath of the Mekong River massacre, the Chinese government immediately sends a team of elite narcotics officers led by Captain Gao Gang (Zhang Hanyu) to the Golden Triangle to uncover the truth behind the murders. Intelligence officer Fang Xinwu (Eddie Peng) also joins the investigation. After it is discovered that the drugs seized on the Chinese ships had been planted by the henchman of a notorious drug cartel leader named Naw Khar (Pawarith Monkolpisit), the governments of Thailand, Laos, Myanmar and China launch a joint task force to apprehend the criminal. However, the road to justice is paved with dangerous and deadly obstacles.

A thematic sequel by the same director is released in 2018, titled Operation Red Sea.
