Novitsky-Fyodorov Grenade
Novitsky-Fyodorov (Граната Новицкого-Фёдорова; Granata Novitskogo-Fyodorova, slang: десятифунтовка, desyatifuntovka that means "ten pounder") is a Imperial Russian hand grenade. First version, desinged by Capt. Novitsky, appeared in 1914; in 1916 it was improved by Praporshchik (2nd Lt.) Fyodorov. Due its extremely large weight (10 pounds) and very long time fuze (12 seconds) it could not be used against soldiers, but was ideal weapon against all sorts of military equipment, pillbox, etc. For effective destroying of barb wire the grenade was fitted with 0,8m (2 ft 7.9 in) weighted ropes that tangle with wire and provide explosion in its center rather than on the ground. Later, this qualities (long delay and very high explosion power) made it popular among safecrackers.
It is hard to estimate the full number of produced grenades but there were no less than 90,000 M1914s and no less than 350,000 M1916s. The production stopped in 1918, and the stores were expended only in late 1920s.
Note: A very few samples survived to present days, so, Novitsky-Fyodorov grenade most likely appears in old movies, filmed in early decades of the 20th century.
