The Norinco Type 63 rifle, also incorrectly referred as the Type 68 by Western sources, is a Chinese made assault rifle that was made to replace the [[Type 56]] in Chinese service when soldiers needed a combination of long rifle range and rifle firepower. Despite the fact that it resembles the SKS, it uses the rotating bolt system of the [[AK-47]] rather than the tilting bolt system of the [[SKS]]. It was also exported to Vietnam, Cambodia, North Korea, Anti-Soviet forces in Afghanistan, Albania, and semi-auto surplus variants were also exported to Australia before the introduction of the 1996 bans on the legal ownership of semi-automatic longarms and pump-action shotguns.

Norinco Type 63 with no bayonet and 30 round AK magazine - 7.62x39mm
Norinco Type 63 with folding stock - 7.62x39mm

The Norinco Type 63 rifle, also incorrectly referred as the Type 68 by Western sources, is a Chinese made assault rifle that was made to replace the Type 56 in Chinese service when soldiers needed a combination of long rifle range and rifle firepower. Despite resembling the SKS, it uses the rotating bolt system of the AK-47 rather than the tilting bolt system of the SKS.

A folding-stock variant was also made in limited numbers for paratroopers. It was also exported to Vietnam, Cambodia, North Korea, Anti-Soviet forces in Afghanistan, Albania, and semi-auto surplus variants were also exported to Australia before the introduction of the 1996 restrictions on the legal ownership of semi-automatic longarms and pump-action shotguns.

The rifle is fed via a 20 round box magazine, and can be modified to feed standard AK magazines, if the bolt-hold open device was removed, which would cause the bolt to close on the magazine as soon as it was loaded. SKS stripper clips could be used to load the 20 round magazine when inserted into the weapon.
