The Nebelhandgranate 39 ("fog hand grenade 39") is a smoke-producing version of the Model 24 Stielhandgranate, used by Nazi Germany throughout the Second World War. The weapon is essentially identical to the Model 24 in terms of construction, but instead of an explosive blast warhead, it is fitted with a head containing zinc oxide and hexachloroethane, emitting smoke through holes drilled into the base of the head.

The weapon's close resemblance to the Model 24 led to fears of soldiers accidentally throwing the wrong type of grenade (potentially very dangerous since the smoke produced contains toxic zinc chloride), and so the Nebelhandgranate 39 had completely different markings to the standard Model 24, including a distinctive white band around the middle of the handle. This proved inadequate when the soldier was not able to visually inspect the grenade before throwing (in confined spaces and at night, for example) and so late-war versions like the example image also had a series of ridges and grooves at the base of the handle so that a soldier could tell the two grenades apart by touch.

The Nebelhandgranate 39 appears in the following films and video games used by the following actors:

Nebelhandgranate 39. This is a later production model with grooves added to the handle so that it would not be mistaken for a Model 24 Stielhandgranate in the dark.
