Mimic is a 1997 science-fiction/horror film directed by Guillermo del Toro, his second feature film (after 1993's Cronos) and his first produced in the United States. The film stars Mira Sorvino and Jeremy Northam as scientists who create a genetically engineered insect species to combat a disease epidemic in New York City; years later, they discover that their species did not go extinct as planned, but has instead evolved into a larger, more predatory form.

Although del Toro was reportedly unhappy with the final cut of the film, it includes numerous visual and story elements that would come to be recognized as del Toro's "trademarks" in later works, such as Blade II, the Hellboy franchise, and The Strain. Also, two actors who appeared in Mimic, Norman Reedus and Doug Jones, would later have more prominent roles in del Toro's films (Blade II and Hellboy, respectively).
