True Lies (1994) True Lies is a 1994 action comedy starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as Harry Tasker, a husband who has kept his life as a covert government agent secret from his wife and daughter until a mission involving the theft of a nuclear device threatens to expose his cover. Based on the 1991 French comedy La Totale!, the film was directed by James Cameron and co-starred Jamie Lee Curtis, Tom Arnold, Tia Carrere, Grant Heslov, Eliza Dushku, and Charlton Heston. True Lies was at the time the most expensive film ever produced, and the first with a budget exceeding $100 million (in both cases without adjusting for inflation). It was originally planned to be the first in a Bond-style lighthearted spy franchise with a 2002 release date hinted at for True Lies 2. However, Cameron cancelled all such plans after 9/11, saying he felt terrorism was no longer something to be taken lightly. True Lies was later adapted as a 2023 television series that premiered on CBS and starred Steve Howey and Ginger Gonzaga. The following weapons were used in the film Main Page: WARNING! THIS PAGE CONTAINS SPOILERS! Handguns Ruger KP90 The Ruger KP90 is the apparent standard-issue sidearm of the agents working out of Omega Sector, the association that employs Harry Tasker (Arnold Schwarzenegger), the pistol is seen being carried by him, Albert "Gibb" Gibson (Tom Arnold), and Faisil (Grant Heslov) in many scenes. Tasker notably uses it when combating Salim Abu Aziz (Art Malik) in the public restroom and the proceeding chase through Central Park and the Marriot hotel. The actual screen-used Ruger KP90 .45 ACP from True Lies. This weapon was actually handled and fired by Arnold Schwarzenegger. Harry Tasker (Arnold Schwarzenegger) fires his Ruger KP90 at the Steyr TMP-wielding terrorist in the bathroom. Tasker's Ruger KP90 on the floor of the bathroom before he kicks it away. Glock 19 In the beginning of the film, Harry Tasker (Arnold Schwarzenegger) uses a Glock 19 pistol to shoot the guards pursuing him from the mansion. In the script, the gun was classified as a Glock 21 (The script called it a .45 ACP), but it was changed to a Glock 19 for the film, likely due to the larger magazine capacity. He was supposed to use the Glock throughout the whole film, but he instead uses a Ruger KP90. Glock 19 2nd Generation - 9x19mm Harry Tasker fires his Glock 19 at the pursuing guards. Makarov PM During the bathroom scene, Yusif (Ofer Samra) attempts to kill Tasker (Arnold Schwarzenegger) with a sound suppressed Makarov PM, but thanks to the camera in the fake cigarette package on the bathroom sink, he is able to see the attack coming from his glasses, and avoids the shot, and he then disarms Yusif using it. Daisy Model 93 air pistol (S&W 659 replica) In the briefcase of Simon (Bill Paxton), Helen Tasker (Jamie Lee Curtis) finds what appears a pistol that closely resembles a Smith & Wesson 659. She uses it to hold Helen Tasker (Jamie Lee Curtis) hostage in a limousine and they struggle for it; a stray shot fired during the brawl kills the driver and sends the limo out of control on the bridge in Florida. Beretta 92SB-C - 9x19mm Juno holds her Beretta 92SB-C on Helen (Jamie Lee Curtis). "Would you like one?" Juno (Tia Carrere) pours champagne while holding her 92SB-C on Helen. Tasker wields a terrorist's Heckler & Koch P9S as he escapes the torture room with Helen. Tasker draws the P9S after his AKM runs dry, but soon has it knocked away by the big terrorist in the muscle shirt entering the shot. This appears to be a rubber prop pistol based on the different style sights and the fact it is knocked to the ground in the next shot. Browning Hi-Power One of the terrorists that captures Harry and Helen is armed with a Browning Hi-Power. Desert Eagle While never seen in use, a Desert Eagle of unknown model is seen in Harry Tasker's (Arnold Schwarzenegger) shoulder holster when he is being X-Rayed by his agency's security system. IMI Desert Eagle Mark VII - .357 Magnum A Desert Eagle is seen in Tasker's shoulder holster through the X-Ray scanner. This is strange since he is seen with a Ruger KP90 in his holster in all other scenes. Submachine Guns MAC-10 While fighting their way through the Crimson Jihad camp, Harry (Arnold Schwarzenegger) hands Helen (Jamie Lee Curtis) a MAC-10 he took off a terrorist. In one of the film's more humorous scenes, Helen drops the weapon down a flight of stairs causing it to go off when it hits each step, the stray rounds scoring several kills. This scene was re-created on Mythbusters and thoroughly debunked. MAC-10 as used by Jamie Lee Curtis in the film - 9x19mm. When the gun fell down the flight of stairs, wire was wrapped around the trigger to get the effect. Harry hands Helen the MAC-10. Helen (Jamie Lee Curtis) nervously handles her MAC-10. Helen tries to fire the MAC-10 at the terrorists, but the muzzle climb is too great for her to handle and she accidentally drops the weapon. The MAC-10 falls down the stairs, firing off rounds as it hits each step. The MAC-10 runs dry and settles on the last step. Harry Tasker (Arnold Schwarzenegger) unloads a pair of MAC-10s with a cool looking crossed-arms stance, which can't be tactically sound - This stance does, however, cut off the length the arms are spread out, making shooting more comfortable for the shooter. Tasker fires off two MAC-10s with his arms cross-linked. This is good for keeping the guns side-by-side, but allows the shell casing to eject above the gun next to it and not bounce off of it. Heckler & Koch HK94A3 (chopped & converted) When Tasker (Arnold Schwarzenegger) and several other agents capture Helen (Jamie Lee Curtis) and Simon (Bill Paxton) for interrogation, they are armed with Heckler & Koch HK94A3s chopped down and converted to full-auto fire to resemble Heckler & Koch MP5A3s. They are also seen in the hands of the SWAT team members escorting the news reporters to the terrorists in the skyscraper. Heckler & Koch SP89 The guards pursuing Tasker (Arnold Schwarzenegger) at the beginning of the film are armed with Heckler & Koch SP89s mocked up as MP5Ks by adding MP5K foregrips and converting them to full auto fire. A number of the SP89s were fitted with attachments at the pistol grip for fitting Maxabeam lanterns. Steyr TMP One of the Crimson Jihad terrorists (Max Daniels) that Tasker (Arnold Schwarzenegger) kills in the bathroom scene is armed with a Steyr TMP in one of its first on-screen appearances. TRIVIA: The actor playing the terrorist, Max Daniels, later appeared in Heat, in which he played a bad guy who gets killed by Robert De Niro while also firing a Steyr TMP. Steyr TMP - 9x19mm The terrorist is shot by Tasker before he can use his Steyr TMP. Like most Hollywood bad guys, his last impulse is to empty the magazine at nothing in particular before falling dead. Cobray M11/9 Many terrorists in the film are seen wielding Cobray M11/9 pistols, converted to full auto and some fitted with wire stocks. Cobray M11/9 - 9x19mm The limo driver holds a Cobray M11/9 on Helen after she punches Harry when he reveals to her he is a spy. Crimson Jihad terrorists chant and fire their weapons into the air, many of them Cobray M11/9s. A terrorist is shot by Tasker and falls back firing his M11/9. A terrorist blind-fires his Cobray M11/9 at the SWAT team. IMI Uzi An Uzi is briefly seen in the hands of a terrorist following Aziz (Art Malik) when he goes to meet Tasker (Arnold Schwarzenegger) after him and his wife are captured by the faction. IMI Uzi - 9x19mm On the left, the terrorist behind Aziz is armed with an IMI Uzi. Rifles / Carbines Custom Shortened AKMS Salim Abu Aziz (Art Malik) can often be seen using a Custom Shortened AKMS with two magazines taped together "jungle-style" as his primary weapon. It appears to have had the barrel professionally shortened to compact status, and clearly uses the hooded Norinco front sight, as well as other parts from both the Norinco Type 56 and the AKMS. Custom Shortened AKMS similar to the one used in the film - built from Norinco Type 56 and AKMS parts - 7.62x39mm. Unlike the gun in the film, the underfolding stock is still attached to this model. It also has a slightly longer front end. Aziz (Art Malik) draws his custom shortened AKMS out from his coat. Aziz fires his shortened AKMS at Tasker as he dives into the second half of the bathroom. Aziz keeps his shortened AKMS at the ready while searching for Tasker, hiding in one of the stalls. Tasker (stunt double) dives from the last stall as Aziz searches the other ones. Aziz aims his shortened AKMS at Dana (Eliza Dushku) as she climbs farther out onto the crane neck. Aziz drops his shortened AKMS, which snags on the tail of the Harrier jet Tasker is flying. Aziz picks up his AKMS and chambers it, even though it should have already had a round in the chamber since he was firing it before. "Take this plane down, now!" Aziz (Art Malik) threatens Tasker with his AKMS moments before his demise AKM A weapon heavily used by the Crimson Jihad terrorists is the AKM assault rifle. Tasker commandeers several AKMs as he makes his escape from the terrorist's camp. AKM - 7.62x39mm A terrorist chants and fires his AKM into the air. Tasker (Arnold Schwarzenegger) mows down terrorists with a captured AKM. A terrorist prepares to disassemble an AKM before being killed by Tasker. Tasker shoots out the lights with his AKM. A terrorist fires his AKM at a Harrier jet (which has to be one of the most stupid things ever attempted). Two terrorists armed with AKMs in the skyscraper. Colt AR-15 Sporter II Carbine (mocked up as XM177E2) When Albert Gibson (Tom Arnold) and several other agents come to the ruined terrorist camp to get Tasker (Arnold Schwarzenegger), they are seen armed with Colt AR-15 Sporter II Carbines mocked up as XM177E2 Carbines by adding a mock flash hider. Heckler & Koch HK91A3 Some of the men guarding the mansion at the beginning of the film are seen armed with Heckler & Koch HK91A3 rifles, as noted by their collapsing stocks, standing in for Heckler & Koch G3A4s. Shotguns Ithaca 37 A Miami-Dade police officer is seen aiming an Ithaca 37 shotgun when the remains of a terrorist helicopter crash down on top of a police cruiser. Ithaca 37 - 12 Gauge An officer is seen to the left of the screen aiming an Ithaca 37 shotgun. The officer fleeing the crashed helicopter is armed with a Beretta 92FS. Machine Guns M60 Near the end of the film when Tasker (Arnold Schwarzenegger) goes to rescue his daughter Dana (Eliza Dushku) from the terrorists in a Marine Corps Harrier, some terrorists flying by in a helicopter fire a door mounted M60 machine gun modified to use a brass catcher at the aircraft, and shatter the front of the cockpit's windshield while Tasker is trying to grab his daughter as she hangs from a construction crane. The M60 machine gun had the fore-end removed and the catch bag mount installed to use the brass catcher on the M60 but retained the standard butt stock and trigger group. M60 machine gun - 7.62x51mm NATO A terrorist fires a door mounted M60 machine gun modified to use a brass catcher from a helicopter. Other Mk II Hand Grenade At one point in the film, Tasker (Arnold Schwarzenegger) uses a Mk II Hand Grenade to kill several terrorists. For those wondering where this grenade came from, it was originally in the script that Juno put a grenade between Helen's legs, saying all she has to do is keep her legs closed, which Helen remarks is a problem Juno seems to have. When the two escape, Harry re-pinned the grenade using Helen's diamond earring for use again later. This was cut from the film, causing this grenade's presence to appear to be a continuity error, however the scene remains in the True Lies novelization by Dewey Gram & Duane Dell'Amico. This grenade, complete with the earring in place of the pin, is prominently visible on many of the posters for the movie and on the region 2 DVD cover. Mk II hand grenade. Upon closer inspection, the Mk II grenade is visible between Helen's legs. Tasker arms the grenade with his teeth. Tasker spits out the earring and flips off the spoon primer handle before chucking the grenade. The grenade lands around a cluster of conveniently placed flammable gas cans. M72A2 LAW At the end of the firefight in the Crimson Jihad camp, Salim Abu Aziz (Art Malik) uses an M72A2 LAW to try to kill Harry Tasker (Arnold Schwarzenegger), although Harry is able to escape the blast by diving into the ocean. M72A2 LAW - 66mm. Aziz takes aim with the M72A2 LAW rocket launcher. Aziz fires the M72A2 LAW. Note how the wire line used to guide the prop rocket's path is visible. FIM-92 Stinger When the USMC Harriers are cleared to destroy the trucks the Crimson Jihad and the nukes are traveling in, one of the terrorists attempts to shoot down one of the planes with an FIM-92 Stinger, but another terrorist is blown out the windshield of the truck by the backblast. FIM-92 Stinger with IFF interrogator - 70mm Two terrorists pull out an FIM-92 launcher to combat the Harrier jets. A terrorist flips up the sights. It is quite correct for them to not bother to unfold the IFF antenna, since they probably do not care if the aircraft currently trying to kill them is friendly or not and without the IFF interrogator attached to the launcher it would not do anything anyway. The terrorist fires the FIM-92 at the Harrier jets, and inadvertently kills another terrorist with the backblast. Note that the Stinger's gripstock changes from a real one with a mounting latch in the image above to a flat-fronted prop one here: this prop also has a diagonal bar or piston to keep the sight in position, which is not a feature of a real Stinger. It should be noted in reality, the backblast would have killed every single person in the van, or at least severely wounded them. General Dynamics GAU-12/U When Tasker (Arnold Schwarzenegger) takes off in a Marine Corps AV-8B Harrier II jet, he uses its General Dynamics GAU-12/U 25mm rotary cannon to great effect when demolishing the 23rd floor of the skyscraper, and later uses it again in his attempt to shoot down the terrorist helicopter. US Marine pilots are previously seen also using the weapon to destroy a truck being driven by Crimson Jihad terrorists on the Key Bridge. Three real, armed USMC Harrier IIs of Marine Attack Squadron 223 (VMA-223, "Bulldogs") participated in the filming for a fee totalling $100,736: two aircraft, WP-03 and WP-16, are identifiable in the film, with the third presumably hired in case something went wrong with one of the others. In scenes where Schwarzenegger is shown flying the plane, though, it is instead a full-size fiberglass replica with no working parts aside from the acetylene-powered guns: the canopy and landing gear of this replica are spare parts from a real USMC Harrier II. This prop was variously shot on a soundstage with greenscreen effects and filmed on location, in the latter case being puppeteered from a tower crane on one of the nearby buildings which was painted out with CG in post-production. The prop aircraft was left in the desert after filming wrapped to preserve it and was essentially abandoned until being recovered and refurbished for the filming of The Avengers in 2012: it is the aircraft that Hulk lands on when he is knocked back by Thor during the fight scene on the Helicarrier, being replaced with a CGI version of itself for the following shot where Hulk pulls off its wing. Following this it was purchased and repaired by the Volo Auto Museum in Illinois, where it is currently on display. General Dynamics GAU-12/U with unfired rounds - 25mm A shot of the Harrier's left and right pods, the left containing the GE GAU-12/U, the right containing 300 rounds of 25mm ammunition. Tasker unleashes hell on the 23rd floor. Tasker sweeps the 23rd floor of everything living with the 25mm cannon. The GAU-12/U firing at the terrorist helicopter. The muzzle blast was obtained with a jet of ignited gas. MK-12A The Soviet nuclear warhead used by the terrorists is a prop which appears to be based on the U.S. MK-12A. Its SS-22 "Mirv-6" designation is also fictional.
